You’re looking at one of the most important games in Nintendo history…even though it may not seem like it at first glance.

This is the original Mario Bros. Game & Watch title, released in March 1983. Mario Bros was one of only a small handful of games to release in the dual-screen, horizontal format. This allowed players to play cooperatively by each holding one side of the Game & Watch at the same time.

When it comes to the name Mario Bros, your mind probably goes straight to the famous arcade game full of turtle shells, warp pipes, and POW blocks, but this version is completely different. Both players work together as Mario and Luigi to load up a truck of bottles while navigating ladders and conveyor belts. The game has been re-released in various Game & Watch collections over the years, so it’s likely you’ve played one of the more modern versions of it at some point. What you might not know though, is that the Game & Watch Mario Bros actually predates the original arcade version by three months!

So when we say this is one of the most important games in Nintendo history, that’s because Mario Bros on the Game & Watch marks the very first appearance of Luigi! From that point on, Luigi would become a fixture of the Mario series as a secondary player character, and then eventually a full-fledged protagonist of his own. For all you Luigi lovers out there, you have Game & Watch Mario Bros to thank!

You can see this and TONS of other original Game & Watch iterations on display NOW at the National Videogame Museum in our handheld exhibit! Come check out some of Nintendo’s biggest hidden gems!
