“What would you do if you knew that there were certain documents and records in your vault that were deteriorating at a faster rate than others?

Between the 1930s and the 1980s cellulose acetate lamination was a common treatment considered a safe and advisable measure for document conservation. In time, however, archivists and conservators began to notice and acknowledge its destructive effects and after 40 years, they finally put an end to the practice. By then, however, the damage was done.

As they deteriorate, we lose the historical documents and other resources that our profession is dedicated to trying to preserve.”

More information on Cellulose Acetate Lamintion by visiting:

Woodward, Eddie. "The Epidemic in the Archives: A Layman’s Guide to Cellulose Acetate Lamination" RBM: A Journal of Rare Books, Manuscripts, and Cultural Heritage [Online], Volume 18 Number 2 (8 November 2017)

Eddie Woodward is an archivist with the Library of Virginia’s Circuit Court Records Preservation Program.

Our presevation team at our Kofile, Greensboro North Carolina lab is currently removing this lamination from historical records to save the records for years to come.
