The African Wild Dog, also known as Lycaon pictus or the painted wolf, is one of Africa’s most extraordinary and endangered predators. Here’s why this incredible species deserves our attention:

🐕 Unique Social Structure: These dogs are the ultimate team players! Their pack is a tight-knit community where everyone pitches in to raise the pups, hunt, and look after each other. Talk about family goals!

🏃‍♂️ Endurance Athletes: With the ability to run at speeds of up to 60 km/h (37 mph) over long distances, African Wild Dogs are marathoners of the wild. Their hunting success rate is through the roof, thanks to their teamwork and relentless stamina.

🎨 Distinctive Appearance: Each wild dog sports a one-of-a-kind coat pattern—a true masterpiece of nature’s design. Their patchwork of black, brown, yellow, and white makes them blend seamlessly into the African landscape.

⚠️ Endangered Status: Sadly, these magnificent animals are one of the most endangered species in Africa. With fewer than 7,000 individuals left in the wild, they’re fighting for survival against habitat loss, disease, and human-wildlife conflict.

🎶 Vocal Communicators: Wild Dogs are chatty pack members with a variety of vocalizations. From high-pitched twitters during hunts to rallying calls, their communication skills are as impressive as their hunting prowess.

🌱 Ecological Importance: As apex predators, they play a crucial role in keeping ecosystems in balance, helping to control prey populations and maintain the health of their environment.

First night in the Azores. An evening stroll around the streets of Punta Delgada. Portugal playing soccer against the Czech Republic so the streets are quiet and beautiful. What an eye opener this place is.

Zoom in back right.. by complete fluke Rhys Armstrong and myself find ourselves with a lively crowd in Punta Delgado in the Azores to see Portugal beat the Czeck Republic 2- 0. Lifetime memory!!

Catching a glimpse of leopards is always a thrill for any wildlife adventurer!

Contrary to popular belief, these majestic creatures don't spend all their time in trees. But when they do climb up, they're much easier to spot! Keep an eye out for dark objects or tails hanging down from tree branches. Remember to scan termite mounds too! Leopards often rest on them during the day and use them as a vantage point while hunting.

Going on a safari adventure soon? To identify different animal tracks, look at the number of lobes on the pads and the presence of claw marks. Lions and leopards have large pads with retractable claws and three lobes at the back, while hyenas and wild dogs have two lobes with claw marks. Lion tracks are larger than leopard tracks.
