Wall Dogs Mural “Mining in Vermilion County”. Did you know or Strip Mining was a significant industry in Vermilion County, employing over 4,000 people in 1897 and 1899? In 1870, A.C. Daniels sank a shaft for the Elsworth Coal Company in what is now Vermilion Heights. This marked the beginning of underground mining in the area. By 1890 there were 64 mines producing in the county. By 1925, Vermilion County’s coal production ranked First in the nation. 🤗

Wall Dogs Mural “Germantown” located on the Fairchild St Overpass/east of Danville High School. Germantown grew up around the original C&EI shops near the end of the 19th century named for many skilled workers of German descent attracted by the shops. Fairchild was the Main Street of the town where the Germantown Fire Station and City Hall building still stands at the corner of Fairchild Street and Bowman Ave. In 1908 the area officially became part of the city of Danville but to this day retains its identity. Landmarks in this neighborhood over time have hee been: Fairchild Grade School, the C&EI Depot, Garfield Park and the railroad underpass known as “The Subway”. Pick up your Complimentary Wall Dogs Magazine/Walking Tour Map at our office in the Palmer Arena or at the beautiful Lima Bean Glassworks & Gifts today 🤗

Wall Dogs Mural, C&EI Railroad which was organized in 1877 as a consolidation of three: Chicago, Danville and Vincennes Railroad. The city of Danville was the midpoint of the primary mainline between Chicago and Evansville. The first repair shops for locomotives and cars were built on the west side of the city in 1877 at the intersection of East Fairchild and Section Streets. When the original shops became obsolete it was decided to build new shops on the east side of town in the Oaklawn neighborhood. Expansion of the railroad in the early 1900’s led to the doubling of the shop capacity just a few years later, at which 1200 people were employed there. So much awesome history! Come and pick-up your Complimentary Wall Dogs Magazine and Walking Tour Map at our offices at the Palmer Arena or Lima Bean Glassworks & Gifts.
