Sweetgrass basket-making is a skill that has been passed down through generations, preserved by the Gullah community in the Lowcountry, who are descendants of West African slaves. The baskets were originally used to process rice, a common crop in both West Africa and South Carolina

Sweetgrass basket-making is way more than beautiful or trendy baskets for the home. This art form and skill, still found in The Lowcountry areas of South Carolina, has been preserved, thankfully. The baskets, originally used to process rice, were hand-crafted by those in the Gullah community, most descendants of West African slaves. Take a look to learn more about these amazing products 👇

This species is truly great to behold. They are majestic, being the largest of herons native to North America. Keep an eye out for one of these extremely adaptable birds if you're near fresh or saltwater marshes, mangrove swamps, flooded meadows, lake edges, or shorelines.

Ever heard of the Carolina Marsh Tackey horse? Right. They're aren't many around these days. They are a very old breed that came from a type of Iberian horse introduced to the southeastern coast by Spanish settlers some time ago. These beauties are sturdy and well adapted to the marshy and swampy areas in the region. Though now a rare breed, you will still find examples of these magnificent horses on Daufuskie.

These large beauties, also known as Golden Silk Orb-Weavers are completely harmless - for humans, that is. 😁 Their large and impressive webs can be seen around the garden, in the woods, and outside windows. While it's no fun to walk into one of these super webs, Banana Spiders play a valuable ecological role feasting on less than desirable insects during the warmer months.

Daufuskie Island Community Farm began 7 years ago on “a dream and a dollar”. It is home to a variety of farm animals and organic produce, completely sustainable and volunteer run. Luckily for those awesome volunteers, the cheese made from the goat milk and the eggs from the chickens are some of the best one could ever taste.

Tabby ruins are such a unique part of lowcountry architectural history, and luckily, Daufuskie boasts a good many of these. Tabby, for those that may not know, is a type of concrete that is made by burning empty oyster shells that then create lime. The lime is mixed with water, sand, ash and broken oyster shells. Some of the most lovely and well preserved tabby ruins today stand in Haig Point on Daufuskie.
