The Roy Martin Young Anglers Tournament is Saturday, July 9th. Anglers age 15 and younger can compete in over 30 categories. Tickets are only $5 and can be purchased at any ticket outlet or at the rodeo site the day of the tournament.

Nest #5 was found this morning. This was on a section where we had no one scheduled to patrol. However, a local homeowner knew one of our dedicated volunteers and called her personally.

Last night a busy mama tried to nest. She came on shore 7 times. The first 6 were False crawls. False crawls can occur because of lights, obstacles, or predators. The 7th time she dug a nest pit however our volunteers were unable to find eggs.

If you see a sea turtle on the beach you should :
1. Keep the beach dark (turn off your flashlights and no flash photography).
2. Stay back and still. Out of the water sea turtles see movement and this can scare them back into the water and keep them from nesting.
3. Call our sea turtle hotline 1-866-732-8878

A fun tidbit from Jennifer Lewis who joins us each summer to teach our Dolphins and Whales Course and the Marine Mammals Course. One of Jennifer’s students took this photo while out with class last week. She explains...

"Dolphins love to ride the bow wake of these big ships when they come into port. It is likely just for fun and nothing else. They do this like they also play in waves coming to shore. The speed of the boat and the shape of the front of the boat will play a role in their choice to ride or not. Has to be slow enough for them to catch it. And also the right shape to create a wake that is worth riding."
