Backyard Beekeeping | Classes & Workshops | Hive to Spoon Experiences
(4)
We know how important it is to raise awareness through personal connections with each other and bees. Beekeeping is about more than just honey and we want to get Sacramento engaged by providing bee and pollinator focused experiences in urban backyards, small farms, community gardens and at local businesses. We provide educational services and help people experience the wonder of bees firsthand, encouraging discussions within neighborhoods about bees and beekeeping.

Day 5 - I wish I had knownβ¦.that beekeeping is an art and a science. I wish I had realized that all of the advice and usually well intentioned opinions thrown at me as a beekeeper starting out (and even now!) might be true today and false tomorrow or just not right for me.
Beekeeping techniques change with the seasons, geographic area, purpose of keeping bees, the surrounding environment and a whole lot of things outside of our control.
How and why a person is a beekeeper can be deeply individual to that person or company. I have found that the most experienced beekeepers I know are open to changing based on the needs of the bees and continue learning and trying new things. Letting go of trying to follow the rules or checking the textbook and instead using what you know in combination with listening, watching, relying on the science and taking field notes over many years with the bees is a lot more interesting.

Day 4 is Rookie Mistake. Iβll set the scene for you. I caught a swarm the night before in my little nuc box and plugged them closed for the night. First thing the next morning, I loaded up my Pontiac Vibe hatchback with a hive stand, a deep box, 10 frames of drawn comb several of which had honey, nectar and pollen on them and anything else I could shove onto the folded down backseats to take it to my apiary.
I opened up the back hatch and all of the car doors and tried to rush to yank out the giant stand sandwiched in the back, get the equipment set up and get the bees settled in their new home before the sun was fully up.
Before I knew it the bees from the other hives already at that apiary had FILLED the inside of my car! All over the drawn comb, all over the honey that had thawed and dripped everywhere and on everything else that they could clean inside my sticky bee mobile.
I got as many bees as I could out and drove all the way home with my bee suit fully zipped and all my windows down trying to just survive.

Excited to to participate in 31 days of bees! Day 1 is Who Are You? Good question! Iβm a mama, a teacher, a cat person and a bug person and an advocate of native pollinators and honey bees. I work and play outside 24/7! I take my cues from nature as much as I can and Iβm passionate about altruism and connectivity with humans and our surroundings

Big news! Iβm doing my own waggle/happy dance! The Beecharmers is partnering with @spork.food.hub @fierygingerfarm @solabeehoney @leafandlarkfarm and the Bike Campaign to make @livecannerydavis in Davis a more permanent home for our educational programs and hive tours!! I have been teaching there and loving this unique space since 2017 thanks to @marycarsonkimball and finally have the ability to truly branch out there. This is a huge opportunity to create and delivery bee, pollinator, agricultural and terroir related events and opportunities for our community. What types of classes, events, hands on experiences or opportunities would YOU like to see in this reimagined space?! Let me know! DM me or use the link in bio to connect via email or (omg) call me. I want to hear your ideas and collaborate!
Waggle dance time! These scout bees are telling the swarming colony how to find the best new home. They picked a lovely hole in the top of an oak tree. Field trip dance parties at @fierygingerfarm are always buzzing!!
Yay for summer!! π» SacTown Bites Sunflowers, Bees & Brunch event today partnered with Sola Bee Farms Check out www.hivetospoon.com for more partner events, upcoming classes like Beginner Beekeeping 102 this Saturday (sign up is open!) and Hive to Spoon Farm Tours and Honey Tastings most weekends now through September πβοΈπΆ
The retinue or circle of royal attendants form around the queen as she moves through the hive laying eggs. The worker bees help keep her fed, groomed and protected. They are also spreading her smell throughout the colony letting all of the workers know sheβs still there and still productive. What happens when her pheromone is weak because sheβs becoming less fertile, is damaged or unable to keep laying thousands of eggs a day? She gets replaced! Itβs for the greater good of the colony π
