Join us on National Public Lands Day: Saturday, September 28th as we clean up for the cranes!

We will meet at Point Mallard Park at 8:00 AM for instructions for the day. We will then break into teams and head over to our locations. You will have a designated team leader for each location on the Refuge. There will be prizes for the winning team.

Keep Alabama Beautiful will be supplying the garbage bags and gloves. The volunteers will pick these up at the Pavilion before they leave to go their destination.

Required to Bring: Bottled Water, Closed Toe Shoes, Pants
*The Refuge will have water on the trucks, and DMCT will also be bringing 10 cases of water.
-Recommended to Wear: Sunblock, Sunglasses, Snacks, & Bug Spray
*All Minor Children must be accompanied by an adult

Will you be attending the Clean Up For The Cranes?
September 28th 8am-12pm at Point Mallard Park

Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge provides excellent habitat for many species of native wildlife!
A total of 300 species of birds, 47 species of mammals, 75 species of reptiles and amphibians, 115 species of fish, 38 species of freshwater mussels, and 26 species of freshwater snails have been documented on the refuge.

Bates Farm is a woman owned beautiful 44 acres area about 7 miles from the Beltline, just outside of Decatur.

There are primitive camping sites (primitive camping means no power or water provided, 3 RV sites (dry camping) and glamping !

Bates Farm also offers picture venues, u-pick wildflowers, u-pick fruits and vegetables in season, picnic areas, ninja course, tire swings, nature themed parties, camping gear and nature study kits and fun themed event days!

If safety is a concern they’ve got you covered!
The private campsites are arranged in such a way so sites can not see each other, the whole property is fenced in with only 1 exit and entrance that has security cameras AND the family lives on site and is there in case of emergency!

Compelling Stories of the Southeast is honored to announce that this weekend September 20th-22nd they will have a 50 mile Walk through communities along the Historic Retracement Trail between Leighton and Decatur.

Friday September 20th at 12:00 they’ll begin at Tuscumbia Landing to bless the site, and start the 3-day Walk.

Sunday September 22nd at 9:00am. all Walkers will gather at the Historic Decatur Union Depot Museum. At the Daikon Amphitheater for Native dances and a celebration. Those not walking can go to the Daikon to welcome the Walkers.
There will be food trucks.
All festivities end at 3:00pm
