With great sadness we remember and celebrate the beautiful life of Etta Freeman.

Etta Freeman was a deeply respected educator and community leader here in Decatur.
Born in 1917, she grew up in the historic Old Town neighborhood, graduated from Decatur Negro High School in 1937, and later attended Alabama State University. Her dedication to education spanned over 50 years, during which she taught countless children, sometimes across multiple generations within families, before retiring in 1976. She was known for her compassion, sense of humor, and enduring commitment to her students and community.

In addition to her impact as a teacher, Etta Freeman’s legacy extends into Decatur’s community spaces. Etta Freeman Park, dedicated in 2010, celebrates her contributions and provides a serene space for residents with walking trails and recreational facilities.

Etta Freeman passed away Saturday, December 14th 2024 at the age of 107 (Decatur’s oldest living resident).
She will forever be remembered as a source of inspiration and a symbol of kindness and resilience for Decatur and beyond.

Does your child have a letter for Santa?
Be sure to drop it off at the Official North Pole Mailbox at 350 Market Street.
This isn't just any mailbox; it is a special portal that sends your Christmas wishes straight to Santa Claus himself!

Santa himself reads each one aloud. And every so often, the jolly old man sends videos of him reading these wish lists, which you can watch on VisitDecaturAL.org/Christmas2024.
