Here's how we're preparing our community for the wintry weather:
❄️Animal Services: Animal Services officers will continue to respond to emergency calls.
❄️Denton Municipal Electric (DME): Extra crews are on standby to address any potential weather-related outages. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) does not anticipate power supply issues at this time.
❄️Public Safety: Denton Fire Department is staffing two additional brush trucks and an additional blocker truck. Police Patrol vehicles are prepped and ready to respond as needed. In case of an emergency at any time, dial 911.
❄️Streets and Drainage: Our sanding trucks and plows are ready to go, with staff beginning overnight shifts tonight to prepare to treat roads. TxDOT will handle major roadways, including I-35 and 380/University Drive.
❄️Solid Waste and Recycling (SWR): Curbside collections will continue as scheduled as long as conditions remain safe. If roads become hazardous, collections may be paused until conditions improve. Trash and recycling will be prioritized for pickup. Yard waste collection may be delayed, but please leave all items, including carts and yard waste, at the curb until they can be collected. Additional staff at the landfill are prepared to handle increased collection volumes resulting from the storm.
❄️Water: Water treatment plants and equipment have been winterized. Dedicated crews are prepared to assist with water shut-offs. For assistance, please contact utility dispatch at 940-349-7000.
Helpful Tips:
📍Community Shelters: Anyone seeking daytime and overnight shelter should visit the Denton Community Shelter or Salvation Army Denton. Information on those facilities can be found here: www.cityofdenton.com/beready. Due to the closure of City facilities on Thursday, Jan. 9, our fire stations will serve as the only City warming stations.
📍Protect your pipes: Open sink cabinets to keep warm air flowing around pipes and let indoor faucets drip at a slow, steady pace. Be sure to cover outdoor spigots with insulated covers or wrap securely, and cover exposed outside pipes.
📍Clear your driveways and sidewalks in front of your home.
📍Never leave space heaters unattended and keep at least 3ft from all furniture, curtains, or other flammable material. Don't use generators inside your home, in basements, in garages, or near windows.
📍Tune into the National Weather Service and your local news outlets - they are the authoritative sources on all things weather!
