Pride Month, observed annually in June, is a time of celebration, reflection & advocacy for the LGBTQ+ (Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, & Queer/Questioning) community worldwide. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality, the accomplishments achieved, and the work that still lies ahead ๐
Known as Gay Pride Week, Denverโs first 'Pride' event took place in June 1974 to celebrate gains & commemorate the NYC Stonewall Riots anniversary ๐
The first Denver PrideFest occurred in 1976, the same year the LGBTQ+ Center on Colfax, was founded.ย The Center organizes and produces the festival and parade each year. The event currently consists of a two-day festival atย Civic Center Park, the Prideย 5K & culminates with a parade alongย Colfax Ave ๐
Denver PrideFest now draws 525,000 guests annually, making it the 3rd largest pride festival and 7th largestย pride paradeย in the US ๐๐บ๐ฒ
On Oct. 7, 2014,ย Colorado legalized same-sex marriage, which the Supreme Court ruled in favor of just one year later ๐
Just three years later, Jared Polis, the stateโs first openly gay governor, was elected ๐๐ช
