Hurricane Milton Update:

Hurricane Milton made landfall along Floridaโ€™s west-central coast on the night of October 9, bringing severe rain and powerful winds. Now classified as a Category 1 hurricane, the storm is causing widespread damage as it moves across central Florida, potentially becoming the most destructive storm to hit the Tampa Bay area in over a century.

The storm has already left more than 2.6 million people without power and triggered life-threatening storm surges, with water levels expected to rise by 10 to 15 feet in some coastal areas. Even before it reached the shore, Miltonโ€™s strong winds produced several intense tornadoes, including one in St. Lucie County, which tragically resulted in multiple fatalities.

Key Updates:

โ€ข Milton is sweeping inland with devastating rains and damaging winds, as maximum sustained winds have slowed to 110 mph.
โ€ข St. Lucie County officials have confirmed โ€œmultiple fatalitiesโ€ following a tornado caused by the storm.

Videos circulating on social media show significant storm surges and flooding, especially in Sarasota, where water levels have risen alarmingly close to local landmarks. The National Hurricane Center has issued a flash flood emergency for several parts of west-central Florida, with sustained winds of up to 90 mph continuing to affect the region.

Whatโ€™s up with all the construction in Yellowstone?

With over 4.5 million visits to the park each year, our park roads and facilities receive a lot of wear and tear. Additionally, our window to do most of the maintenance and improvements happens during a short summer season.

Currently, one of the largest infrastructure improvement projects happening in the park is the replacement of the Yellowstone River Bridge. Located on the Northeast Entrance Road near Tower Junction, the original bridge from 1963 will be replaced with a brand-new bridge on a new alignment. The new bridge will be 1,175 feet long and 162 feet high, stretching over the Yellowstone River below. We are also expanding the Yellowstone River Picnic Area and overlook parking areas. This huge project, funded by the , is slated to be finished sometime in 2026!

Our goal is to keep Yellowstone in good shape for you and future generations. Learn more about the variety of infrastructure improvement projects occurring throughout the park at: go.nps.gov/YELLinfrastructure

The entire length of the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina and Virginia remains closed as crews continue their assessment of the damage from Hurricane Helene. To assist with recovery efforts, the National Park Service has deployed its Eastern Incident Management Team, which brings specialized skills and resources to support the parkway with employee emergency needs, emergency stabilization of affected park resources, and damage assessments. As of Saturday morning, 214 National Park Service employees representing 57 national parks from 32 states and the District of Columbia are working with Blue Ridge Parkway staff in the recovery efforts.

National Park Service assessment teams are still completing their initial inspections of the parkway, acquiring the data they will need to analyze the full impact of Hurricane Helene. Based on what the teams have seen so far, significant, and in some cases catastrophic, damage has occurred along the parkway, particularly from milepost 280 to milepost 469 in North Carolina.

In the coming weeks, the assessment teams will utilize the data from their inspections to determine the full extent of the damage including the timeline and cost estimates for repairs. A projected reopening date of any section of the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina has not yet been established. In Virginia, damage assessments and the clearing of debris from the road are nearing completion, which will for allow a phased reopening in Virginia in the coming days to weeks.
