Day One-Temazcal:

The temazcal, from the Nahuatl 'temazcalli' (house where one sweats), refers to an ancestral ritual that involves a steam bath with hot stones and herbal-infused waters. It is used in traditional medicine and the daily lives of the people in central Mexico.

It is said that entering the temazcal is like entering the maternal womb, and when you exit, it's like being reborn. The temazcal bath is carried out for medicinal and therapeutic purposes, both physically and mentally/emotionally.

As a part of our mission to make this trip accessible for all we are raising funds for scholarships and financial aid for those who need it. Soon we will be sending these lovely pins that represent the resilience of the Mexican spirit. We are asking for $25 donation and we will send you an enamel pin.

The axolotl, also known as the “water monster” in Nahuatl, is a unique amphibian native to the ancient lake system of Xochimilco and Chalco in the Valley of Mexico. Revered by the Aztecs as a symbol of transformation and regeneration, the axolotl holds great significance in Mexican culture, particularly in the ancient city of Tenochtitlán and Aztec folklore.

In Aztec mythology, the axolotl was associated with the god Xolotl, who was often depicted as a dog-headed deity and was considered the guardian of life and death. According to legend, Xolotl transformed himself into an axolotl to escape his enemies, symbolizing the creature’s ability to adapt and survive in various conditions. This association with transformation and renewal made the axolotl a powerful symbol in Aztec rituals and religious ceremonies.

Furthermore, the axolotl’s unique regenerative abilities, such as the ability to regrow lost limbs, made it a source of fascination and inspiration for the Aztecs. They believed that the axolotl possessed mystical powers and that its presence brought good fortune and prosperity. As a result, the axolotl was often depicted in religious art and was featured in various myths and stories as a creature of great spiritual importance.

Today, the axolotl continues to be an iconic symbol in Mexican culture, representing resilience, adaptability, and the enduring spirit of the ancient Aztec civilization. Its significance in both historical and contemporary contexts has solidified its place as a cherished and revered creature in Mexican folklore and tradition.
