When we envisioned the Winter Park Express ski train, we had many goals. One was to grow Amtrak’s business. Another was to be a stepping stone to more trains and destinations.
Mission almost accomplished!

They are exploring running trains more often and earlier in the ski season.

I have done my best. Passing the torch now, but a supporter for life!

By Jon Coen It was a warmish Sunday as we strolled through Denver’s Union Station toward our train. We’d arrived Friday night and spent a gorgeous spring (perhaps Fool’s Spring) Saturday wandering the city. That morning , our boards and skis were stowed below as we boarded Amtrak’s Winter Pa...

Today is the last run of the Winter Park Express for the 2024 season, it is also the last trip for our esteemed Conductor Brad since he will be retiring from Amtrak in October. Lucky for us he will be returning in 2025 as a volunteer host.

-- All aboard!! The Winter Park Ski Train, shown here, for its first January 1976 ride of the season.

In 1939, Frank Bulkley started the Eskimo Ski Club to teach Denver children to ski. He used the Winter Park Ski Train to carry some three hundred children from Denver to and from Winter Park Resort every weekend. The Winter Park Express dates back to 1940, the same year Winter Park Resort opened for skiing.

The Winter Park Ski Train was instrumental in bringing ski clubs and the public to Colorado’s slopes. After serving in the 87th Mountain Infantry of the 10th Mountain Division during World War II, Bulkley resumed his involvement with the Eskimos and began a ski shop which was the first in Denver to offer seasonal rentals. His contributions to snow sports undoubtedly increased the growth of skiing in Colorado. In the mid-1950s, 33 ski trains were operating in Colorado.

The inaugural Winter Park Ski Train left Union Station this past January 12, 2024. Governor Jared Polis was on the train and told the public there was more to come. He told Rocky Mountain PBS that they want to make the train more convenient, less expensive, and include Steamboat, Rollinsville, and Eldora on this route. They're working on a mountain rail to make sure people have a better way to get to the mountain areas — both for tourists to power our economy, and for Denver metro area residents and Colorado residents who want to have fun in the mountains.

What do you think about this recent interest in improving the Ski Train?

Since the first run of the season is tomorrow here are some tips to make your experience on the train more enjoyable.
1. It is easier to for us to handle skis if they are in a bag or strapped together.
2. All skis, poles, boards, and luggage should be labeled with your name and contact info so someone doesn't accidentally grab them and so we can contact you if they are returned to us.
3. We do have the capacity to handle large items of luggage (up to 50lbs) as well as skis/boards with ample room for carry on items at your seat.
4. Arrive at Denver Union Station about 30 minutes early (6:30), train doors close promptly at 7:00, this gives us time to load the train and gives you time to settle in and get some refreshments.
5. Arrive at Winter Park Resort platform 4:00-4:15pm, the doors close at 4:30pm and we'd feel bad for leaving you.
6. For those returning the same day on the train you can leave items at your seat, you will have the same seat coming back, however you will not have access to your items on the train during the day.
7. Once the train exits the Moffat Tunnel we are immediately at Winter Park so please be ready to de-board, if you are on the mountain for the day we encourage you to boot-up before or while inside the Moffat Tunnel, the trip through the tunnel takes about 10 minutes.
8. Ask your volunteer host or Amtrak employee any questions.

We hope you have an enjoyable experience on the world famous Winter Park Express ski train.

URGENT!
For those of you that have read the novel "The Last Zephyr" (available at Amazon and other on-line retailers),
please consider making a submission to Colorado Public Radio - CPR. It is a fun way to promote new books like this. Proceeds from sales of this book go to the Colorado Railroad Museum to preserve Zephyr artifacts, so every bit of publicity we can get helps.
Submissions need to be in by December 11!
Thanks so much,

Fellow book lovers! Colorado Public Radio is putting together a first-time project inspired by NPR’s Books We Love and we want you to help us curate.
