1. Your county, city, or township
2. Exact digging location (street address & nearest cross street)
3. Type & extent of work (front/back/both sides of property)
4. Planned start date & time

Tomorrow is the winter solstice! If you’re planning any outdoor projects, remember these cold-weather tips:
1. Watch for frost depth: Digging can be tricky with frozen ground, so plan carefully.
2. Check for holiday lighting hazards: Keep holiday lights and decorations away from buried utility lines.
3. Locate markers may be harder to see in snow: Double-check the dig area and keep it clear of snow and debris.

Planning a dig? Remember to respect the tolerance zone around utility line markings. If you need to dig within this zone, always use hand tools and take extra care. Digging too close to these lines can lead to serious hazards.

Good news — contacting 811 is FREE! There’s no charge for marking public utility lines.

However, if you have private lines (like a sprinkler or invisible fence), you may need to hire a private locator, which could have a fee.

Regardless of the cost, ensuring ALL lines are marked is critical for safe digging. If you have private lines, be sure to enlist the help of a private utility locator in addition to 811 before you begin excavation.

If no lines have been marked after your request, don’t assume it’s safe to dig! Ensure all utility companies have provided a “positive response” confirming that they have responded. If you haven't received confirmation from each company listed on your ticket, you can check the status online or call IOC at 811 with your ticket number.
