The Caves of Bamyan: A cultural masterpiece carved into the rock
The Caves of Bamyan are a series of Buddhist cave monasteries carved into the side of a cliff in the Bamyan Valley of Afghanistan. The caves date back to the 6th century AD and contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art in the world.
The two most famous caves contained two colossal statues of Buddha, which were over 1,500 years old. However, the statues were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001, in an act of religious extremism.
Despite the destruction of the Buddha statues, the Caves of Bamyan remain a significant cultural and historical site. The caves are still home to several Buddhist murals and paintings, and they are a popular tourist destination.
