That’s the work of Corrado “Joe” Parducci, one of America’s most important architectural sculptors who worked most of his 60 year career in Detroit! Join City Tour Detroit in looking up at some of our most important Downtown architectural landmarks that Parducci made even more beautiful with relief work in a staggering variety of materials and styles. For a Monday Memories post on Labor Day we thought it only fitting to remember one of Detroit's most iconic labor organizers and advocates - Myra Wolfgang.
She was beloved by laborites for her tenacity, and debating, organizing, and negotiating skills on behalf of all workers, but especially women and people of color. Wolfgang was also a favorite of reporters because she "gave good quote" and was willing to unflinchingly face down both business leaders and government officials.
A Detroit resident from the age of two, she found her calling the day she walked into the offices of Hotel & Restaurant Employees and Bartenders International Union Local 705 looking for work. The phones were ringing and ringing- so she answered them! And kept answering them until by the end of the day, she had a job as the office manager!
She gained attention for her role in organizing the Woolworth employees sit-down strikes, which were followed by similar actions at the Book Cadillac and Statler Hotels. This earned her an appointment by sympathetic Governor Frank Murphy to a seat on the Michigan Unemployment Security Commission.
Wolfgang soon returned to full-time union work, becoming her union's International Vice-President. It was her work, starting in 1964, that organized the Pl***oy Bunnies and brought them into the union. Myra was instrumental in putting together the first Coalition of Labor Union Women conference in 1971.
She also helped get Michigan's first minimum wage law passed in 1966.

On August 27, 1818 the 132 foot Walk-In-The-Water became the first steam-powered vessel to visit Detroit. Over the next several years it made numerous round-trips to Detroit from its home port of Buffalo stopping en route at various places along the Ohio shore. In addition to ample storage space for cargo, it could accommodate over 100 passengers in cabins or berths. It traveled as far as Green Bay carrying goods and supplies for the American Fur Company. This color lithograph from the 1830s takes some liberties with the color and shape of the Walk-In-The-Water, but identified architectural elements of Detroit in the background are accurately placed and depicted They include These include Truax House, Merchant's Wharf, Campau house, Roby Wharf, Fort Shelby, Jas. A. Abbott's Warehouse, Wings Wharf, St Ann's Church, Gov. Hull's residence, French Chapel.
This 1871 lithograph by the Calvert Co. of Detroit was based on an 1820 sketch made by civil engineer George H. Whistler, whose son James became a famous artist, perhaps best known for his painting often mistitled "Whistler's Mother."

For over a hundred years, a highlight of late summer for so many people was a visit to the Michigan State Fair in Detroit. These views of its early days at the former Fulton farm near 8 Mile are mostly from 1910 or thereabouts. The view of the Coliseum is newer, since it wasn't built until the 1920s. And the girls eating lunch on the grass is definitely older. It's the only photo in this group that the photographer is identified, and it's Jex Bardwell- who died in late 1902.
Once again, thanks to the Detroit Public Library for allowing us to share these photos.

Frederick James Stevenson was a British adventurer who spent most of the 1860s travelling in North and South America. The fabled British Museum has a drum he collected while in Peru. Detroit did better than that. Stevenson was also an accomplished amateur photographer. The Detroit Public Library's Burton Historical Collection holds this collection of images he made while camping on Belle Isle in 1866 as a guest of the island's owners Alexandrine Selden Campau Willis and her husband Richard Storrs Willis. It's hard not to notice that a number of these photos were taken from the water!

Sunday marked 120 years since the doors first opened to the Belle Isle Aquarium. The aquarium at Belle Isle is the oldest in America and houses a collection which includes every species of fresh water fish found in Michigan's lakes and streams and species from other inland waters throughout the country. In addition there are tropical fish, alligators, turtles, sea lions, otter and South American beaver. An educational exhibit shows the hatching of fish eggs of different species. It is considered one of the finest aquariums in the United States exhibiting fresh water fish.
