Costa Rica is not only rich in biodiversity and natural beauty, but it's also home to an incredible cultural heritage deeply rooted in its indigenous tribes. Long before the Spanish arrived, various indigenous groups thrived in this lush land, living in harmony with nature, building vibrant communities, and developing rich traditions that still echo through the valleys and mountains today.

🌿 The Indigenous Tribes of Costa Rica
There are eight main indigenous groups in Costa Rica today, each with its own unique language, customs, beliefs, and way of life. These are:

Bribri
Primarily located in the Talamanca region near the Caribbean coast, the Bribri are known for their deep spiritual connection to nature. They have a matrilineal society, meaning property and clan lineage pass through the mother. Their traditional homes are often surrounded by cacao trees, which they use in sacred ceremonies.

Cabécar
The largest indigenous group in Costa Rica, the Cabécar live in remote, mountainous areas, often accessible only by long hikes through dense rainforest. They speak their own language and hold strong to ancestral practices, including natural medicine and spiritual rituals tied closely to the rhythms of the land.

Maleku
Found in the northern part of the country near Guatuso, the Maleku people have a rich oral tradition, vibrant ceremonial dances, and distinctive art. They are known for their detailed handcrafts and symbolic masks, often made from balsa wood.

Boruca (Brunca)
Famous for their Diablitos Festival, the Boruca live in the southern region and are incredible artisans. The festival is a reenactment of the Spanish conquest, where villagers wear colorful devil masks and traditional costumes to symbolize resistance and cultural pride.

Ngäbe (Guaymí)
Living mostly in southern Costa Rica along the border with Panama, the Ngäbe are semi-nomadic and have a strong tradition of agriculture. Women often wear brightly colored dresses called naguas, and the tribe as a whole values simplicity, community, and spiritual harmony.

Teribe (Térraba)
Located in the south, the Teribe have worked hard to preserve their language and customs. Like the Boruca, they are talented woodworkers and create ceremonial masks and statues that tell stories of creation, animals, and their ancestors.

Huetar
Once a dominant group in central Costa Rica, the Huetar people were known for their stonework and sacred spheres, some of which can still be found today in places like Palmar Sur. While much of their language has been lost, their cultural legacy is preserved through storytelling and communal gatherings.

Chorotega
Residing in the northwestern region of Guanacaste, the Chorotega were influenced by Mesoamerican cultures. They are known for their amazing pottery, created using ancient techniques passed down through generations, often featuring symbols of animals and nature spirits.

✨ A Living Culture
Despite centuries of colonization, many indigenous Costa Ricans continue to honor their traditions, languages, and spiritual beliefs. They live close to the land, practicing sustainable farming, herbal medicine, and sacred rituals that reflect a profound respect for the environment.

Some of the tribes, like the Bribri and Cabécar, still maintain traditional cosmologies, where the universe is divided into spiritual realms. Elders, called awa, serve as shamans or spiritual guides, connecting their people to the wisdom of the past.

🌎 Why It Matters
Costa Rica's indigenous communities are living treasures—keepers of ancient wisdom and stewards of ecological balance. They remind us that there's a different way to live, one that values community over consumption, harmony over haste, and spirit over status.

If you ever have the chance to visit one of these communities or attend a cultural festival, it’s an experience filled with heart, depth, and a real connection to the roots of this magical land.

Pura vida to the fullest—rooted in history, lifted by culture.
