Paragliding in the Alps 😎

Checking off a bucket list item I didn’t know I had. We met some paraglider guides going up the gondola who told us that they take kids as young as five and do as many as 6 runs a day. That sparked a conversation about “once in a lifetimes” and “are we crazy?” After some wild dreams that night, we set out for our adventure.

This experience was absolutely incredible and a lot less scary than I thought it would be. No sudden drops, no jumping off a cliff, you just run down a hill and get carried away by the parachute. Our guides did do some fun tricks at the end of our flight, but that was our choice.

We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful landscape to glide through or better weather. Switzerland is breathtaking.

Jungfraujoch Top of Europe - a saddle between two mountains with over 13,000 feet in elevation. The Aletsch Glacier runs like a river around the mountain tops.

I definitely felt the effects of the altitude pretty immediately, but it was worth it for the experience. It’s a stark, otherworldly kind of beauty. Inside, they have an ice palace which was super fun to explore (and slide around!)

Definitely recommend!

Thrill Walk on top of Schilthorn in Lauterbrunnen

Suspended almost 1000 feet above the next surface of the mountain, this really got me more wobbly than I expected. I’m not sure if having the clouds helped or hurt my sense of how high up we were. It took a lot of trust in engineering to get myself in that tube.

We walked from the Schilthorn experience to Lauterbrunnen and stopped at Trummelbach Falls on the way. (And then caught back up with my parents who couldn’t do as much walking as us.) This was my first experience with a waterfall INSIDE a mountain and it was incredible. We also watched base jumpers and paragliders all throughout the valley.

Switzerland was the last stop in our journey so we decided to stay 4 days before heading home.

To say Switzerland is beautiful is a sad understatement. Every single day, every place we went, felt like we were walking through a storybook. We could have spent an entire vacation in Switzerland, hiking, riding gondolas, exploring lakes and quaint little towns.

At the advice of a good friend, we stayed in Grindelwald, right in the heart of the Swiss Alps not far from Interlaken. We did a short hike our first day that made us feel like we were walking through the movie set of sound of music. (Yes, I know that doesn’t take place in Switzerland.)

The first night, the town had a street festival complete with road slalom and Swiss dancers and delicious food.

One day in France! Strasbourg has bounced back and forth between French and German rule for hundreds of years. Especially volatile during WWII, our guides grandparents were born to French parents under German rule, became French again, forcefully made German citizens again, and we’re finally French again once the war was over.

It is a magically picturesque city with a unique mix of cultures. We tried their famous Tarte Flambeé, pork sausages with sauerkraut and more Alsacian specialties.

The cathedral is beautiful and impressive as all are, but inside they have an astronomical clock which is wound daily and was completed in 1842.

Highly recommend visiting this unique city some day!

Tauck River cruise day 5: Heidelberg

We visited the amazing Heidelberg Castle (complete with 220,000 liter wine barrel built INTO the castle) and wander the streets of historic and beautiful Heidelberg.

Pros for cruises for some people will include never having to make restaurant decisions or reservations. Personally, this is a negative for me as I actually enjoy researching local restaurants. Our food on the boat was really top notch, but I prefer to get out into the local environment.

We could have easily spent more time exploring Heidelberg.

Klopp Castle climb (we did a LOT of climbing and hill walking this trip)in Bingen, Germany

The view from the top was worth it! And a nice way to get a little more exercise after floating on the river most of the day. That’s definitely one advantage of a river cruise over an ocean cruise, there’s a lot more on shore time and you never have any “days at sea.”

Koblenz, Germany was our next stop on the river cruise. It was founded in 8 AD as a Roman outpost because of the confluence of two rivers - the Rhine and the Moselle.

After we visited the city, we spent a relaxing afternoon on the boat cruising down the most picturesque part of the trip and doing what the crew calls “castle ping pong.” We looked left - castle, right - castle, back to left - another castle. It really was something pretty incredible to behold and imagine what life was like back when the river was the vessel of life and trade.

This is part one of Day 3.

Our river cruise took us to Amsterdam, Cologne, Koblenz, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, Lucerne, and Basel. We were in the Netherlands, Germany, France (for a day!), and Switzerland.

The Cologne day was short but we got to see the giant cathedral and we had a really special evening visit to a working castle called Burg Satzvey where a real life Count and Countess still live.

We managed to get some good pictures and still have some fun, but unfortunately, our oldest son got food poisoning and spent the evening throwing up. But I want to encourage you all not to give up on traveling with kids even if things like this happen. We can rebound, we can help our kids still see all the good in a vacation even when you don’t feel your best.

We’ve all been there - last year Aaron got sick in Costa Rica. When I was a kid, I spent half a vacation sick with Strep, had an anaphylactic reaction, and threw up my last night. BUT I still remember all the amazing things we did and saw on that trip.

So persevere! Teach your kids resilience! Nothing brings out these opportunities like travel.

This summer our family did something we’ve never done for vacation. We went on a Tauck River cruise down the Rhine River from Amsterdam, Netherlands to Basel, Switzerland. The crew, staff, and accommodations were fantastic. And while I still wouldn’t say I’m a cruise person, it was a great experience.

If you are cruise folk or love to have a guide and lots of relaxation, a river cruise is definitely the way to go.

We spent a day in Amsterdam before boarding the MS Grace so we got to visit the Rjiksmuseum, walked past the Anne Frank House (tickets sell out two months in advance, FYI!) and had a phenomenal seafood dinner at Pesca - Theatre of Fish.

Until I can get my kids to Japan (where I studied abroad and lived with a host family), we will enjoy authentic Japanese dinners in the meantime.

How do you get your kids to try everything and be open to new foods, especially when traveling? Expose them to it. We have a two bite rule in our house. No matter what they’re served, they have to try at least two bites of it- every time. Of course there are things they won’t like, but over time, the more you’re exposed to a food, the more likely you are to learn to like it.

My kids still hate peppers in every form except microscopically hidden in something. They whine and complain like every other kid when I make them something that’s not they’re preference, but they get no other choice.

And over time, we’ve been thankful to see the fruits of our labor in watching our kids eat or at least try anything that’s put in front of them.

There is no judgment here, just encouragement. You can do it too. Start small, expect pushback, but keep at it. (*this is not advice for anyone with children with special needs and their unique eating challenges*)

So cool to share our favorite place with friends. These guys have been friends for over 30 years and now all of our kids get to be friends too. Such an awesome experience traveling together.
It takes some flexibility, but traveling with friends can be some of the most memorable moments of your life. Plan your next trip today!

On April 16, 278 years ago (I missed it by two days!), the battle of Culloden Moor marked the end of the Highlander way of life and independence from England.

In less than an hour, 1250 weak and starving Jacobite rebels were killed on these fields by a British army almost twice their size.

The story is a fascinating one, and for anyone with Scottish heritage, definitely a place to add to your bucket list. Learn your history and teach it to your kids. It makes us better in the future.

Hike! Get outside and hike with your kids. I will promise you that they will get better at it. They will almost certainly annoy you when you first start trying it, but they will grow and so will you. So many of the places we travel have awesome hiking trails. What are some of your favorites?
1. Acadia National Park
2. Finger-span bridge, Wissahickon creek/Forbidden Drive
3. The Gorge trail, Acadia National Park
4. Muir Woods, CA
5. Sequoia National Park,
6. Arthur’s seat, Edinburgh, Scotland
7. Steall Falls, Glencoe, Scotland
8. Valley View, Yosemite (our favorite trail was Glacier Point, not pictured)
9. Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica

Mount Desert Island

Vacationing with friends always guarantees laughter. You never know what you’ll encounter. Carrying an oversized puppy up a ladder on a trail? Check. Being caught at the top of a mountain as a thunderstorm comes rolling through? Check. Shoe malfunctions? Check. So grateful for best friends to laugh our way through life.

Top of gondola ride in Teton Village, WY, 2019

Clients of mine are currently enjoying the vacation I planned for them to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park/Jackson Hole. I can’t wait to see pictures and hear how it went. It’s so fulfilling when I help make a vacation exactly how a family imagined it.
