Ethan and I went to the LOTSA meeting last night at the hatchery. It was nice to hear what is going on from the highest ranking people in the system.
On a sidenote, Ethan was in the water for 20 minutes just before the meeting he and banged three steelhead. 😳🎣

https://lotsa1.org/

Got in town just in time to make a couple casts before the LOTSA meeting last night. Couple highlights from the meeting and Dec.

Trestle pool work is not complete.

Many projects on the horizon, nothing slated what’s next after trestle completion.

Egg take was scheduled for 1.8 million chinook eggs, currently at 2.2 million and one more barrel will be taken.

Baitfish seem to have rebounded, NYS will be looking at increasing chinook stocking 10% this upcoming stocking.

Hatchery is being evaluated (state wide hatcheries being evaluated) to see how to best update/continue. Currently the Salmon River Hatchery is one catastrophic disaster away from losing all fish in it.

Fish look healthy. Biggest weight at hatchery was 26.5lbs. Remember fish are about spent when they get to the hatchery meaning we likely do have some 30lbers in the system.

August is a crucial month to the hatchery for our coho and steelhead. Both coho and steelhead stay in the river/hatchery system for over a year before heading to the lake where as kings head somewhat immediately after hatching.

DEC has no thoughts on the Pink salmon returns. Says they were stocked in the 70s and obviously there is a natural reproduction somewhere. Not sure why the spike this year in the SR. Not worried longterm about pinks.

The hatchery would like to reiterate if you hear something and have questions, call or stop by. “Don’t believe everything you read out there”. The folks at the hatchery will answer any questions you have.

Day 40 on the river was awesome!! The last week had ups and downs with crazy numbers of people on the river, we finally got the rain that we needed and awesome pods of fish moving throughout the river. Timing is everything over the next few weeks.

We had a fun couple days, floating the river over the holiday weekend. Lots of people enjoying our beautiful fishery on tubes kayaks and boats and still some decent fishing. It was hot!

We had a couple good days in the estuary last week.

08/19/2023

We have 2 estuary dates and 4 salmon, season dates left. Steelhead is still pretty open.
