The narrows are back open!

The Narrows Trail is open! After a historic snowpack and subsequent run-off, the world-famous Narrows hike has hit safe water levels and the trail has been reopened! This magical hike starts at the end of the Riverside Walk trail and heads up the Virgin River into amazing red rock canyons. Full distance is about nine miles roundtrip, but a shorter trip to the iconic views of Wall Street, is a shorter five-mile, out-and-back excursion.

Remember:
-Conditions change quickly so check the www.NPS.gov/Zion for daily updates.
-Flash flood danger remains year round, so check the weather before you go, be cautious and stay aware during your hike.
-This out-and-back trail is an incredible experience, but is slow moving due to wading through water, and hiking through rocks and sand. Plan to be out for several hours and plan your water, food and clothing appropriately.
-You will get wet. Wear shoes and clothing that is comfortable when fully submerged in water. Also, check in with an outfitter to get appropriate gear, if you wish.
-Be respectful of the area – please do not write your name in the mud, spread mud on the walls or stack rocks in the canyon. Leave no trace and pack everything back out with you.
-Most of all, have an amazing time experiencing one of the most iconic hikes in the world.

Waterfalls in parks are popular places for viewing and taking photos. While beautiful to see, they can pose risks to unprepared visitors.

We wanted to see the waterfalls, but mist! Slippery rocks, steep slopes and undercurrents can catch you by surprise when walking through or in the vicinity of a waterfall.

What’s the rush? (Besides the water.) If you’re exploring a waterfall, make sure to know the potential hazards. Keep a safe distance from the edge, avoid slippery rocks, wear stable shoes (flippy floppies may lead to slippy sloppies) and always watch your footing.

Image: Screenshot of National Park Service tweet that reads, “Don't go chasing waterfalls...cautiously approach and be careful of slippery conditions. In fact, you may just want to stick to the rivers and lakes that you're used to.”

Brian Head Town has taken on starting to clear SR-143 south of town. UDOT is seeking funding to jump in next week. No estimated opening date as of now. They need to dig out 10 miles of road.
Pics: The closure gate south of town is top pic, bottom center. The dirt road leads to the resort’s maintenance shop.

Heads up — Starting this week, Canyon Overlook Trail will be getting a face lift!
Visitors who use the trail this summer will find an improved trail tread, rehabilitated masonry, and new or rehabilitated handrails. The NPS planned this work to protect the trail’s historic, rustic appearance and enhance safety for hikers.

We anticipate completing the project in early-June. The trail will be closed when work is happening. In order to keep the trail open for as many hikers as possible, we’re scheduling most work to happen from Monday to Thursday. While we may need to close the trail at other times, we plan to have the trail open on most Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

The Canyon Overlook Trail starts just outside the east end of the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel. Canyoneers traveling the route in Pine Creek (below the trail) need to be mindful of their surroundings, watch for signs showing closed areas, and be aware that work may be happening above them.

To learn more, check out the NPS App, or visit go.nps.gov/hyny3u
