James R Barker with the best two-tone horn and salute on the Great Lakes
James R Barker with the best two-tone horn and salute on the Great Lakes.
The James R. Barker has the most iconic salute on the Great Lakes. Known as "The Barker Bark," the captain of the Barker frequently delights ship-watchers with an extra-long “Masters Salute.”
Two salutes are common while ships pass under the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth. Neither are required or necessary. They are performed at the discretion of the ship’s captain.
The "captain's salute" consists of one long and two short blasts of the horn. The "master salute" is similar but consists of three long and two short blasts.
While the master salute was traditionally thought of as a more formal salute for special occasions, captains use both types of salute interchangeably these days.

Listen for the salute. The Alpena is the only steam-engine laker with a high pitch steam horn.
Built in 1942, the Alpena is the oldest active laker on the Great Lakes. She primarily sails Lake Michigan, visiting the Duluth ports only a few times a year.
This video was taken at the South Pier Inn. Owned and operated by the Sola family, the hotel is celebrating its 20th year. It is known as The Shipwatcher’s Destination because it’s located right at the foot of the Aerial Lift Bridge and mere feet from the South Pier on the Park Point side of the Canal.
