From atop Smelter Mountain, Durango looks beautiful below. You can see Fort Lewis College on the mesa and the downtown Durango strip. Many of our favorite places are in this shot and it would be difficult to list them all from memory.

Spring is here and soon summer will be in full swing. Relax on the deck at Durango Valley View and watch the red mountains change tone and hues. Our home faces east so the mountains can be a little washed out in the morning, but are stunning in the evening. You can see the sunset horizon line work its way up the mountain as the sun sets behind the house.

We were scrolling through our camera roll and came across some B-roll images that never made the feed. It's been awhile since we made a post about Durango's great small businesses and we support them and try to shop local.

We are always seeking out new places to eat, drink and shop, too. We can vouch for each of these establishments and hands-down to 81301 as our favorite coffee shop.

This is by no means a definitive list, just the places where we had taken some pics but never posted them.

- Honeyville a couple miles north of Durango Valley View

- Tasty coffee, great staff, next door to a patisserie

- Favorite book store for hard-to-find regional topics and amazing selection of rare books.

- Biggest bike shop with plenty of selection and service. We love perusing from time to time and seeing the high-end builds.

- We love their scones and coffee. When we need a break downtown, this is our spot.

- We lovingly refer to it as the Mothership as we are drawn back time and time again for their awesome beer and the fave Mexican Logger.

If you've been thinking about golf, your day is coming soon!

Hillcrest Golf ( ) is scheduled to open March 26th. They also have an indoor golf simulator.

Another great public golf course is Dalton Ranch ( ) located near Durango Valley View. They're opening day is scheduled for May 4th.

And the south location of Serious Texas BBQ ( ) has mini golf for those looking for some putting shenanigans.

With love in the air because Valentine's Day is right around the corner, we figured we'd express our true love for getting outside and exploring. We hope in 2025 to explore new places, try new things and and ride new-to-us trails and gravel roads.

That includes returning to places we've experienced. Take Bisti Badlands - you could spend a lifetime of exploration there and not see everything the natural world has produced. Or the San Juans and La Platas and Wenimuche Wilderness with their immense beauty and nearly endless natural wonders. Sometimes you need a life-changing bikepacking trip to really get out there.

Durango Valley View is available for your family, friends and significant other. Our home has hosted many wonderful families over the years with some ending the trip engaged, others exploring the Four Corners region and even a little one - we think - drawing her ski runs up at Purgatory.

Winter is a beautiful time of year to enjoy the southwest. Durango Valley View has plenty of openings this winter season. With Purgatory Ski a half-hour away, Durango 10 minutes away and Mesa Verde within an hour, there's a full week of things to do in the Four Corners region.

Another annual tradition is almost here in Durango - the Snowdown. This year's theme is "Board Games" and the schedule of events has been posted. From January 24 to February 2nd, there's something (multiple!) things going on every day.

If you're in town, check it out. It's our way of getting through the winter blues and also a great way to meet new friends.

We support better commuting infrastructure ( 🚲️ cycling, 🚶🏼‍♂️ pedestrian,
🚴🏻‍♀️ 🚵🏻 recreation) in Durango and the surrounding area. Bike Durango is a terrific newer non-profit that just became a 501(c)3 entity - meaning your donations are now tax-deductible!

Durango Valley View supports better cycling infrastructure and we recently joined as a member of Bike Durango. At the very least, sign up for their newsletter for the latest news and topics about town. They put out a great zine, too! (love live zines!)

Durango Valley View has last-minute availability Thanksgiving week for anyone needing a place to host their small family or just want to get away for a much-needed break. Or if you are passing through and need a couple days to take a break before the final push home, we can be your basecamp.

A winter storm is supposed to move in and dump up to two feet in the mountains but Durango and the Animas Valley may see only a few inches.

Purgatory Resort is open for winter sports 20 minutes north of us and Durango Hot Springs is a one-minute / .5mile drive down the road.

The La Platas are changing with the season as seen from near Hillcrest Golf Club . We received a nice amount of rain over the last few days around Durango and Hermosa but above 9,000 feet or so it was all snow.

This coming weekend is the annual balloon rally and balloon glow. It's a beautiful sight to see! Durango Valley View has availability through the end of 2024 at the moment. If you're considering coming to Durango, this is a great way to kick off your stay!
