If your school receives the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, ask your student if they tried COTTON CANDY GRAPES this week! Just like their name suggests, these grapes taste like cotton candy! However, after the initial burst of sweetness, they end up tasting mild and juicy. If you want to try them at home, they only pop up in stores a few weeks of the year and they sell out fast! Grapes are fat-free and make a perfect snack.

DYK - it's illegal to grow gooseberries (and currants) in North Carolina! These plants are excellent hosts for a disease called White Pine Blister Rust which destroys white pine forests.
Even though we can’t grow them, we can still enjoy eating gooseberries! This fun fruit tastes like a sour grape and like the grape, gooseberry varieties are green, golden, and reddish. Because gooseberries are a close relative to currants, they often get mixed up.
If your school receives the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, ask your student if they tried GOOSEBERRIES this week and which color!

Green beans or string beans? (tomayto/ tomahto!) Same thing. Years ago the bean had a very tough "string" running down the side. The "string" was bred out of the vegetable and today most green beans consumed are "stringless."
If your school receives the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, ask your student if they tried a GREEN BEANS this week!

A kumquat is small and oval citrus fruit, about 1-2 inches. Unlike oranges, the Kumquat peel is meant to be eaten as it's the sweetest part of the fruit. The inside tends to be very sour and tangy! Be cautious of seeds, they are not eaten. Kumquats are native to southeast Asia. The word "kumquat” comes from a Cantonese word that means “golden orange.”

If your school receives the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, ask your student if they tried LEMON this week?
During your next mealtime chat, see if your child knows the meaning of the expression "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade."
Because kids generally enjoy sour foods more than adults, they might not think of sour as a "bad" thing. So it might be interesting to see what they come up with.

If your school receives the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, ask your student if they tried KIWI this week?
How to select a ripe kiwi?
1. Find a slightly firm kiwi.
2. Gently press down on skin. If it gives a little it’s ripe and sweet. If it's rock hard, it's not ripe and will be sour.
3. Keep kiwis on the counter, at room temperature to ripen.
