This week in honor of Black History Month, we tip our caps to Bud Fowler. Bud is the first Black man to play professional baseball, predating the legendary Jackie Robinson‘s Major League debut by more than 60 years (NationalHall.com) for the International Association in 1878. According to Baseball-Reference.com, Bud enjoyed a career batting average of .308 in 465 games in the minor leagues, during which time he also scored 455 runs and stole 190 bases. Fowler played 10 seasons of organized baseball and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame class of 2022 as part of the “Early Baseball” ballot held by the Veterans Committee.

As our first Black History Month highlight, we recognize our majority owner, Frank Thomas. Nicknamed “The Big Hurt”, Frank made his presence felt at the plate with 521 career home runs, a batting average of .301, and a WAR rating of 73.8, just to list a few of his stats. Among being a Hall of Fame player on the field, Frank continues to leave a positive mark on the game!
