The Writing Classes with Rick Ohler Begin Sept. 15.
Can you believe this is my 36th year offering writing worksops?
If you have been promising yourself you’d write your novel, essay, family history, memoir, short story or children’s book, but you never around to it, now could be the time. Maybe all you need is a gentle push, some friendly encouragement and the discipline of weekly classes.
-We’ll be in Zoom Format this fall, so geography is no longer a problem.
-As always, beginning and veteran writers are welcome.
-Bring your works in progress or respond to my prompts.
-The workshop environment is always supportive, inclusive and based on a simple bargain: we will listen intently to your story; you will do the same for ours.
-Workshops have limited enrollment, so there is time for all.
-There is no substitute for in-person connections, but hanging out with folks who share some common interests for a couple of hours a week comes pretty close.

Creative Writing Workshop —Tuesdays 7-9 p.m. Sept. 15-Dec. 15 $80
All genres welcome—fiction, essay, poetry, memoir, children’s literature

Writing Your Memoir or Family History — Thursdays 4-6 p.m. Sept. 17-Dec. 17 $60
The stories of our lives or of the lives of our ancestors are precious gifts for generations to come. There are so many ways to write a memoir or a family history. We’ll help you find a style that’s comfortable.

Writing it Down: The Gift of Memoir and Family History — Tuesday mornings 9:30-11-30
Sept. 15-Nov. 10 Limited to five participants. $120. One spot left!
This focused workshop is for writers who have specific project in mind and want to make some real progress on it. The expectations are greater, but the results are worth the effort. With only five writers, each participant will be expected to present writing each week.

Message me on Facebook or at [email protected] if you’re interested.
Payment by check, cash, Venmo or Zelle.

2020 Writing Classes With Rick Ohler Begin January 21:

Tuesdays—Creative Writing Workshop—7-9 p.m.—Aurora Senior Center—$80/13 classes—Classes start January 21. All genres.

Thursdays—Writing Your Memoirs and Family Histories—4-6 p.m.—Aurora Senior Center--$60/13 classes—Classes start January 23.

Beginning and experienced writers are welcome in these supportive, nourishing classes where the overriding principle is very simple: we will listen intently to your writing and offer encouragement; you, in turn, agree to listen intently and encourage ours. Work on projects you have underway or respond to suggestions from me. As you share your writing with the class, you will gain understanding of the process and see improvement.

2020—It would be difficult to take those numbers as anything other than an inspiration, an invitation, perhaps even an obligation to get after our writing. In the world of optometry 20/20 defines visual acuity, but as writers and storytellers, 20/20 means taking a good look, having some fun focusing what we know and what we have yet to learn, and understanding that, in the long run, our stories are what bind and sustain us.

Fall Back into Writing with Classes from Rick Ohler
Classes Begin September 11 — Our 33nd Year

You’ve known for a while that you’d like to write, but, somehow, you never get around to it. Maybe what you need is to spend some time in one of the classes I’m offering this fall. I’ve found over three decades that your best writing comes out when you make it a regular part of your life. The more you write, the better you write. For many writers, it’s as simple as that. I welcome writers of every experience level and genre to join kindred spirits in this supportive, encouraging, low-key setting where the commonality of purpose creates a dynamic that gets wonderful results.

Choose from Two Classes--Writing Your Memoirs & Family Histories (Mondays at 4 p.m. or) or Creative Writing Workshop (Tuesdays at 7 p.m.)

1) Writing Your Memoirs and Family Histories
Mondays 4-6 at the Aurora Senior Center
September 11- December 11
Fourteen sessions $75

There is nothing quite as sustaining and nourishing as sharing the stories of our lives and the lives of our forbears. And the dynamic that is forged when writers--whether they are experienced or absolute beginners--come together to read their own stories and listen to those of their classmates is priceless. It's a fun, fascinating way to spend two hours with wonderful folks. If you are ready to record some of your personal experiences or family stories for your family, this class is ready to welcome you. Writers of all levels of experience can join these encouraging, supportive, low-key afternoon sessions. Participants can work on stories in progress or use my suggestions and then share them with the class. The class is limited to twelve participants with each writer entitled to offer his or her work for feed back and encouragement every other week.

2) Creative Writing Workshop
Tuesdays 7-9 p.m. at the Aurora Senior Center
September 12 – December 12
Fourteen sessions $75

The Creative Writing Workshop invites all writers, from beginners to veterans. Writers of fiction, poetry, memoir, essay are welcome. Whether you're a new writer just getting started or a veteran writer who would like the company of kindred spirits, this encouraging, supportive class is just the ticket. The writings from past session have run the gamut from comedy to tragedy, from serious to frivolous. It's a great way bolster your own writing and have some fun in the process. Share writing that you already have under way, or work on assignments that I will provide. The class is limited to twelve participants with each writer entitled to offer his or her work for feed back and encouragement every other week.
