Thanks very much to Brattleboro Savings & Loan for their work to help repainting some of the trim at our historic Dutton Farmhouse property as part of their annual Walk the Walk Day!

It's these little details, like historically accurate paint colors and reproduction historic wallpaper that really make staying in a Landmark property something special and different. We're grateful for the help in making the history of this 1849 farmhouse shine!

Nestled on a shaded hillside overlooking the expansive lawn at Rudyard Kipling's Naulakha complex is Kipling's 1895 Carriage House, now a 2 bedroom overnight Vermont rental with a gorgeous, light-filled kitchen in the former greenhouse and suitably stunning views to the mountains of New Hampshire. Gorgeous in the Fall or any time of year :)

Kipling's Carriage House is a treasure. Tucked high on a wooded hillside steps away from Rudyard Kipling's Naulakha, it's a place full of stories and memories just waiting to be discovered. Come and make your own memories and become part of history today!

Happy Halloween from all of us at The Landmark Trust USA!

There may not be any skeletons in the chimney, and we've cleared all the spider webs from the porch, but you can still enjoy the view at Rudyard Kipling's Naulakha just like the home's most famous houseguest, Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who we believe to be in the photo here c.1895.

The past comes alive when you stay overnight at any of our historic homes...but we can't promise no ghosts 👻

No matter what angle you view it from, there's no denying it - our properties shine in the Vermont Fall foliage. Even as the leaves begin making their final descents from their summer perches, it's the perfect time to get your reservation in for Fall 2025 and 2026. Autumn is our busiest time of year for good reason, and properties book up months in advance, especially weekends. There are limited weekend spots left in October 2025 but still good availability on weekdays. Weekday and weekend availability is still good for October 2026, but don't wait!

Today begins a series we'll be running showcasing the beauty of our Vermont properties in the Fall, beginning with Rudyard Kipling's Naulakha. People often ask why Kipling chose to live in rural Vermont. They must not have seen this view ;)

Check out the article in VTDigger this week on the work we're undertaking to protect Rudyard Kipling's Naulakha from the increasing impacts of climate change. As a nonprofit historic preservation organization, we exist to protect important places like this and give people opportunities to experience history in unique ways, but as anyone with an older house knows, this takes resources! We're so grateful for the support from the National Park Service and the Save America's Treasures grant and look forward to sharing our progress and the work moves forward!

The nonprofit Landmark Trust USA is working to protect the late English writer’s Dummerston hideaway — where he penned “The Jungle Book” and “Captains Courageous” — from increasingly punishing precipitation.

When you think of Vermont, you think of maple syrup. Despite being the 2nd least populous state, Vermont is the nation's leading producer of maple syrup, the sweet nectar of the gods. But that delicious golden honey doesn't just happen, it takes a lot of work to get from the inside of a maple tree to your plate.

That work happens largely in sugarhouses, and while you can't throw a stone in Vermont without hitting a sugarhouse you can visit, we may have the only one you can stay at! Built in 1915, The Sugarhouse housed the boilers converting raw sap to maple syrup at Scott Farm Orchard until 1970. It then served as primitive housing until it was converted into an overnight vacation rental in 2004. Radiant heating, pine paneling, and historically appropriate furnishings were added, letting the historic character shine through.

It's an experience with history and culture you just can't get anywhere else, and with winter approaching, there's no cozier time to book your sugary getaway!

We're proud to be offering a two-night stay in our 1-bedroom Sugarhouse property as part of the Preservation Action Foundation's annual auction. The winner will also enjoy a private tour of vibrant Brattleboro, VT, winner of the 2023 Strongest Town contest, with the town's Planning Director!

Support important preservation advocacy work and stay in a real Vermont maple sugarhouse built in 1915 to house the boilers that converted raw sap to maple syrup. Of course, we're also throwing in a bottle of maple syrup from the neighboring sugarbush 🍁

Buildings are history keepers! There's so much more to a place than just the wood or bricks that make up the structure. Historic buildings tell the stories of generations who have lived, loved, and lost within those walls. They're stories that just don't exist in the same way with newer buildings, and they're worth saving. It's why we do what we do.

Likewise, vacations can be so much more than just relaxing. You can write yourself into the long and storied history of a place with a Landmark vacation and relax even more knowing your stay is helping save that special place for future memory makers like you!

The Landmark Trust USA is a nonprofit organization that preserves historic properties and makes them available as short-term vacation rentals. Our historic properties are in Vermont and Rhode Island and include Rudyard Kipling’s “Naulakha,” the famed southern Vermont retreat where Kipling wrot...

There is a magic in historic places. The stories of the past reverberate through the mortar. And the longer the history, the more more stories there are, like at the c.1802 Amos Brown House, our oldest Landmark property.

Built by Amos Brown and his wife, Sally, the home had 10 people living in it by the time it was sold in 1853. Some were children, but who were the others? And the biggest mystery of all, why did Brown build the house out of harder to obtain brick when wood was so plentiful on his own land?

The home, the oldest in Whitingham, VT, would have many more owners over the years, including Carthusian monks in the mid-20th century, and has been a Landmark available for overnight rentals since 2000. To many of our returning guests, the peace and solitude make it their favorite Landmark. Add your name to the lineage and preserve this special place with your stay today!

Hearty congratulations to Landmark board member and Treasurer Tom Martyn on this well-deserved recognition. Tom's service to the community is making the Brattleboro area a better place to live, work, and play for us all and a better place to visit for all who stay at our historic properties. We're honored to have him as part of our team!

BS&L's Tom Martyn has received the prestigious 2024 Vermont Outstanding Community Service Banker of the Year award by the Vermont Bankers Association, Inc.

Tom’s leadership as the bank’s Executive Vice President and CFO and his long-term history of volunteering and service on boards of local organizations, such as the Retreat Farm and The Landmark Trust USA at present, have significantly improved the Brattleboro area community. That leadership and focus on bringing good into our communities has set him apart as an individual committed to the same values that have guided BS&L since 1912.

Please join us in congratulating Tom on this well-deserved recognition!

It's beginning to look a lot like Fall at Scott Farm Orchard and all our properties in Southern Vermont. There are a few small holes in the schedule in October, particularly the earlier parts of the weeks at Dutton Farmhouse, arguably our most scenic property. But if you have your heart set on Rudyard Kipling's Naulakha or The Sugarhouse, now is the perfect time to lock in your spot for Fall 2025!
