Fun Fact Friday-The Coosawattee River
by Leslie Faith, CCC Member
• Did you know that the Coosawattee River Begins in Ellijay where the Cartecay and Ellijay Rivers Meet?
• It flows West, for 49.30 miles, through North Georgia and branches off to form many local creeks such as; Tails Creek, Talking Rock Creek, Harris Creek, and many more.
• The River continues to Murray County where it helps form Carters Lake, before the dam, and then flows West to Gordon County where it merges with Conasauga and forms the Constanaula River.
• The river offers great kayaking, tubing and fishing. In fact, there are four parks in Coosawattee River Resort that sit along the river:
• Canoe Park is off the Main Gate. It is a popular “take-out” spot for tubers and kayakers. It is close to Fife bridge. There are picnic tables and a good area for fishing.
Use Ellington Gate to get to the following parks:
East Park: It has a nice walking trail, plus areas for camping, grills for cooking, and easy river access. There is a good size pavilion and a playground and restrooms.
Fish Trap Park: Fish Trap is called that because of the V design that was made by Native Americans to trap fish. It has a swinging bridge to connect it to Riverside Pool and is the largest of parks for camping and is the only park that has RV spots, in addition to tent sites. There is a large pavilion and restrooms.
North Park: Is the smallest park. There are a few tent sites, grills and a small pavilion with bathrooms (these are closed for Winter).
Grab your lunch and enjoy the parks available in the neighborhood.
