A Downton Wedding

Mr. Carson surprised us all with his proposal to Mrs. Hughes at the end of last season. Downton fans are anticipating another special event - a Downton Wedding is absolutely beautiful.
Traditionally I knit a shawl for the brides. With brides on
my mind this summer, I was inspired to created a sampler shawl for Mrs. Hughes. Each section of the sampler depicts a word of encouragement from the previous brides of Downton Abbey. We begin with Sybil, her short marriage was filled with STRENGTH of conviction for her deep love of Tom Branson. Daisy's marriage lasted a few short hours. Despite her reservations, she honored William's SWEET LOVE by giving him the desire of his heart. Mary's engagement to Matthew began with ROMANCE surrounded by snowflakes. Our wild, impetuous Rose gained TRANQUILITY when she married Atticus. Who can forget Anna's perseverance as she gripped HOPE throughout her marriage to Mr Bates. I hope that you enjoy reminiscing with the past brides of Downton Abbey.

Bejeweled

There is a scene at the end of the first Hobbit movie where the director pans through the treasure vault inside the Lonely Mountain. You see green scales peeking out from piles of jewels and treasure. Everything seems peaceful and then....Smaug’s eye suddenly opens.
This scene from the Hobbit inspired another shawl — Bejeweled. The slight boomerang shape is embellished with eyelets spotted with beads reflecting the jewels in the Lonely Mountain. I envisioned Smaug’s back and tail sparking with jewels as I created the border. The alternating spike sizes provide some whimsical fun.

Light and Shadows

Imagine sitting under a shade tree overlooking a field of wildflowers. Some of the flowers are shaded by the passing clouds while others shine in the sunlight. That is the inspiration for the Light and Shadow shawl. Pick out you favorite self striping yarn and sit under a tree enjoying the light and shadows of your day.

The center spine triangle is enhanced with texture created by Stockinette and Reverse Stockinette stitches. The peek-a-boo slits are surrounded by garter rows. The slits are created by binding off on one row and casting the stitches back in the next row.

Smaug 1968

Long ago I gave my husband a 1968 Mustang convertible as a gift. He named this beautiful car Smaug because of its deep green exterior and his love of The Hobbit. At the first sign of spring we would jump in the car and cruise the shoreline of Long Island with the top down. The Summer Tunes cassette would be blaring in the player as the wind blew through my hair. What joyful memories.

My memories, and The Hobbit’s infamous dragon Smaug have inspired this lightweight shawl. Smaug exposes his chest in the center sweeping eyelets and cables. His scales wrap around you and his wings rise from the beautiful border. The gorgeous deep green yarn would compliment the shining exterior of my husband’s convertible.
My knitting passion was in its infancy in our cruising days. If I could relive those moments I would garb myself in this lovely shawl, ask Alexa to play some Beach Boys tunes, and enjoy the wind in my face. I hope you are inspired to take a cruise in the sunshine.

Watching Downton

Each Downton Abbey Season has been filled with surprises! I’m not
sure my heart can take another season without a knitting stress valve.

In 2013 my test knitters challenged me to create this sampler cowl.
They are a faithful group of ladies who are always up for a
challenge. I am not sure who received the greater challenge. This
has been a labor of love. Many life challenges have impeded the
publication of this pattern, but in the end I am victorious like many
of the characters in Downton Abbey.

This cowl design became an eclectic mix of patchwork, lace and
cable knitting. Each block finds its inspiration from a character living
in the manor house during Season Five. This cowl is organized into
9 sections which contain one to three block patterns.

I hope that you have as much fun with this cowl as we did. Enjoy.

Skyscraper

The New York skyline has always thrilled me. When I worked in New York, the Empire State Building or the Chrysler Building reflected the afternoon sun or lit up the night as I gazed out my office windows.
When I moved to the Lehigh Valley, my fondness for skyscrapers deepened. The remnants of Bethlehem Steel can be found near my home. The remaining smoke stacks and crumbling buildings speak of decay to many outside our valley. The story is different for those of us who live here. We see the bridges and skyscrapers that were built from the steel manufactured in the Bethlehem Steel furnaces and feel proud.
I can only imagine what the onlookers thought as those steel beams rose as skyscrapers against the clouds. The beams gave structure and support for the floors, walls and windows. The stitch design reflects the numerous windows and beams.
This Möbius is a versatile accessory. Wrap it around your neck as a cowl - lift one wrap over your head as a hood. In the winter, use it as a cowl over your coat and switch it to a wrap when you are cozy inside. You can even tuck your hands in the twist to warm them on a chilly day.

Tri, Tri, Tri Again

I have always enjoyed triangles. My fascination with them started in Geometry and was followed by right square triangles in quilting. The triangle shape has been a staple in my shawl design, but this time I wanted to add more. How do I create three triangles within a triangle shawl? The challenge was to keep it simple. Here’s how it comes together...
The first asymmetric triangle forms naturally as you knit. Triangles two and three are created as triangle two expands across the row. The simpler stitch patterns give you variety as the triangles form.
A friend aptly named this shawl, Tri, Tri, Tri Again, for the three triangle shapes. Little did she know that this design took three tries to create just the perfect triangle combination. I guess the old adage remains true - “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, again.”

Let’s Mesh Around

I don’t know about you, but I have a stash of absolutely colorful yarn. It isn’t always easy to find a pattern that highlights colorful yarn and is interesting to knit. So I set put to design something that fits that need: a stockinette and eyelet stitch pattern set on an angle. It’s a quick, fun, and simple knit that shows off whatever yarn you might choose. Appalachian Trail

When I saw the color way name of this beautiful yarn created by Groovy Hues Fibers, I laughed and laughed. I had to own this yarn that described my relationship with backpacking - - How to Thru-Hike the Appalachian Trail...From Your Couch.
Early in our marriage, my husband and I had opposite ideas regarding backpacking. My idea was setting up a base camp with a comfy air mattress to return to after a day of hiking. My husband had backpacked into Yosemite as a teen and loved carrying everything on his back. We compromised with tent camping and canoe trips.
Ten years into our marriage I watched a PBS documentary that followed several through hikers traveling the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. I had just quit my job to be at home with our four year old and the thought of a cheap weekend away with my husband intrigued me, even if it meant carrying a pack on my back. Our first foray on the AT in northern New Jersey met with blisters, beautiful environs, and an early morning wake up call from a momma bear and her cubs. We had three more adventures on the AT before I returned to my couch.
Suzanne’s color choices highlight the spring flowers peeking out along the trail. I hope you enjoy this knitting journey as much as I liked my hike back on memory lane.

A Nutcracker

I have watched Vanessa dance through life - literally. She glides so gracefully across the stage. I often think that she beams brighter than the stage lights. Several years ago I enjoyed seeing Vanessa in a local production of the Nutcracker as a Christmas treat. When we heard of her engagement, my husband had the bright idea that I should design a Nutcracker Wedding shawl for Vanessa. I laughed initially at the idea, however, the seed was planted and has germinated into this lovely shawl.
Your shawl begins at the top with THE FLOWERS. DEW DROP enters from the wings as THE SUGAR PLUM FAIRY joins the back of the shawl. CLARA dons her petticoat just before THE MOUSE KING's little crown dances across the back. The Acorn stitch heralds THE NUTCRACKER. SNOWFLAKES float across the last section before the border. The final border displays the SOLDIER DOLLS standing in their perfect lines surrounding THE CHRISTMAS TREES..
I hope you enjoy knitting this for someone who has danced in your life.

Railways
This pattern is more of a recipe. You can add or subtract yardage. Use multiple yarns or a single color. Create your own unique color palate.

This pattern is adaptable for any weight yarn. You will want to change the needle size when using fi*****ng, worsted or bulky weights. Your yarn yardage can also vary when changing yarn weight. This is a great project to use up left over balls. Knit away and add the next leftover ball when it runs out.

Color in the Lines

I loved crayons as a kid. I was so excited when I received the BIG box with the sharpener on the back. There were so many colors! Your leftover yarn stash is like a box of crayons, except you might not find a lot of coloring pages (patterns) for your yarn scraps. This shawl is a great coloring page for your yarns. I’ve included helps for you to calculate your yarn amounts so you can make the most of your scraps. (I used my leftovers from my Watching Downton Cowl for this project.)

Postcards

A few years ago I heard of the return of my friend Connie’s cancer. I wanted to create something for her that would physically wrap her in my love and prayers. At the time, I was beginning Aroha Knit’s Initiate Design challenge. An inspiration board was the first step of the design process. My mind was drawn to the numerous photos that she had posted of her lovely home of Cuenca. Each photo reminded me of a postcard.

This crescent shaped shawl uses short row inserts to provide interest and movement. As you knit, your eyes will take in the striping clouds and mountains. The terra-cotta rooftops frame the beautiful blue domes of the Inmaculada Concepcion Cathedral. An evening of fireworks against the mountains bring the end of your perfect day (there are always fireworks in Cuenca). Connie has traversed through her favorite places in Cuenca wrapped in her shawl. Her pictures have added the right touch to this pattern.

I hope that you enjoy the journey wherever your shawl takes you.

Radiant Dragon

One summer morning I was contemplating what to do with the beautiful yarn sitting on my lap. Does your yarn ever speak to you? Mine seems to speak at times. “Make a dragon.”
Out of my imaginings, The Radiant Dragon evolved. The stockinette field is accented by the expanding eyelets which radiate from the edge of each garter stitch spike. This gives a little mind stimulation to the simplicity of the other rows. Enjoy!

Radiant Dragon is my go to comfort and meditative knit.

Lakeside

Lakeside is a simple Hap (square) shawl. The center field is knit corner to corner. The first half of the square (increases) is knit in solid stockinette. The decrease section gives you a break from the stockinette with the alternating eyelets and purl stitches. Once the center field is completed, stitches are picked up along each edge and the border is then knit in the round.

The half stockinette, half lace center field gives you multiple options for styling. You can fold it in half, accenting the stockinette, lace or a combination of both. The square is large enough to cover your lap or throw over a small child.

Horizonte

I have always been attracted to texture. It appeals to my visual and tactile senses. I think that I love yarn for similar reasons. Texture strikes my imagination and inspires design. Such was the inspiration for this design.
I recently viewed a picture of my first Spanish exchange daughter’s little girl. She was leaning against the clear wall of the balcony outside of their hotel room in Tokyo. The depth of field held her in crisp focus with the buildings below softly vanishing into the horizon. I named this poncho Horizonte (horizon in Spanish) to honor the lovely Ava who inspired this design. Horizonte reflects the idea of rooftops softly fading into the horizon. This easy knit gives variety to the knitter as you progress upwards.
I hope this poncho accompanies you into the horizon of many future adventures.

Gobnait

My husband and I look forward to spending time together watching the Scottish games, shopping and enjoying the music at our local Celtic Classic each year. Years ago, we stopped at the “Learn your Gaelic Name” booth for fun. I was so surprised that the Gaelic translation of my name was nothing close to my own. My name starts with a ‘D’ - Debra and my Gaelic name is with a ‘G’ - Gobnait. As you can imagine, my curiosity was peaked. After all, my name means Bee - one who seeks. It makes total sense once you know the whole story…  Gobnait is an Irish saint, recognized in the Orthodox and Catholic Churches for her use of herbal medicine to heal people, her skills as a beekeeper and for protecting her village from the plague. As the patron saint of beekeepers, her name also has been anglicized as Deborah, meaning “Honey Bee.”
You have a little bit of everything in this Crescent Shawl Sampler: knit in the row below, lace, double yarn overs, and wrapped stitches. These all come together to create the buzzing bees in the field of flowers before they create the honeycomb . I think Gobnait might have enjoyed this shawl.
Gobnait is a crescent shaped shawl that begins with Garter Tab. To obtain the crescent shape, you will increase one stitch on each edge for three rows and increase by two stitches on each edge for the fourth. This increase pattern is repeated throughout.
