Wrack Line of Life
Do you know what a wrack line is? It’s the strip of seagrass, shells, and other debris left behind on the beach by the retreating high tide. At first glance, the wrack line might not seem too exciting, but it actually has a number of benefits. First, the decaying material washed up on the shore provides food and shelter for tiny invertebrates, which, in turn, are eaten by shorebirds, crabs, and other animals. Second, the washed up organic material helps fertilize coastal grasses and encourages the development of dunes. For more information about our coastal habitats, check out the Nature Center at the Apalachicola Estuarine Research Reserve, 108 Island Drive, Eastpoint, FL.
