If I say, ‘Old Sow’, what comes to mind? Was it a whirlpool? The Bay of Fundy is home to the largest whirlpool in the western hemisphere. Named ‘Old Sow’, it’s also the second largest in the world – second only to Norway’s Maelstrom Whirlpool. The rotating water of a whirlpool (aka vortex) is caused by opposing currents, or by a current encountering an obstacle. So why does Old Sow have such a name? Because of the sound it makes.

It was not only an honor to be asked by Bob Duchesne (Maine bird expert and author) to take him out on the boat but to be part of one his his best trips of all time is really special. I learned a great deal and look forward to learning more about the rare birds that we are fortunate to be able to see in our area. Thank you Bob and crew.
