First, thanks to all of you for your incredible feedback and support on my northern lights photo that I posted yesterday morning. I'm overwhelmed with your response and kind words! Also, welcome to all my new page followers — I'm so delighted to have you here! This page just crested the 8,000-follower mark the other day, and just since yesterday more than 400 new fans have found their way to this small corner of Facebook. I'm so appreciative of all my followers, from the newest arrivals to the longtime supporters!

Second, many of you have asked how I know when to go out and look for the northern lights. It is definitely a mix of science and art. There are a number of websites that track solar storms and share near-real-time data that suggest with some degree of accuracy how intense a storm might be. That's the science part. The art part is interpreting the data and making a best guess of whether there's a chance the aurora will be visible on a particular night and in a particular location. It's almost always a gamble, especially on a night like Thursday when weather conditions played much more of a role than the intensity of the solar storm, which we knew was raging just above the clouds.

And finally, here's another photo from the magnificent display of aurora. We lucked out here in northwestern Vermont that a brief break in the clouds coincided with one of the best periods of the light show. This image is from 11:25 p.m., just as the clouds were starting to roll back in, and fog rose from the snowmelt and the decaying ice on Malletts Bay.
