It’s almost that time of year!!
Nesting season is upon us (May 1 - August 31)
Take a look at 4️⃣ easy ways you can help protect sea turtles this season.
1️⃣ Make sure to pick up your trash/litter 🗑️ and take it with you to dispose of. You also want to ensure that you take your umbrellas☂️ tents⛺️ and chairs🪑 with you. Nesting females and hatchlings can get entangled in these beach items.
2️⃣ Keep the beach DARK 🌌
Turn off any cell phone lights or porch lights, close your curtains, etc. Sea turtle hatchlings use the reflection of the moonlight over the water to go towards the ocean. When other lights are near, they become disoriented and go in opposite directions.
3️⃣ Keep the beach flat 🏖️
Fill in any holes and knock down sand castles 🏰 Nesting females and sea turtle hatchlings can get stuck in these holes 🕳️ . Nesting females may als get frightened by the large sand castle and decide not to lay their eggs upon the beach.
4️⃣ Say no to plastic 🛒🛍️
Sea turtles mistaken these plastic grocery bags as for one of their favorite meals- JELLYFISH 🪼 When they ingest these bags, they feel full and will stop eating. So remember those reusable bags, ask for 📄 or skip the bag entirely!
All conservation work for endangered sea turtles at and on Topsail Island is authorized by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, ES Permit 23ST05.
