It’s almost that time of year!!
Nesting season is upon us (May 1 - August 31)

Take a look at 4️⃣ easy ways you can help protect sea turtles this season.

1️⃣ Make sure to pick up your trash/litter 🗑️ and take it with you to dispose of. You also want to ensure that you take your umbrellas☂️ tents⛺️ and chairs🪑 with you. Nesting females and hatchlings can get entangled in these beach items.

2️⃣ Keep the beach DARK 🌌
Turn off any cell phone lights or porch lights, close your curtains, etc. Sea turtle hatchlings use the reflection of the moonlight over the water to go towards the ocean. When other lights are near, they become disoriented and go in opposite directions.

3️⃣ Keep the beach flat 🏖️
Fill in any holes and knock down sand castles 🏰 Nesting females and sea turtle hatchlings can get stuck in these holes 🕳️ . Nesting females may als get frightened by the large sand castle and decide not to lay their eggs upon the beach.

4️⃣ Say no to plastic 🛒🛍️
Sea turtles mistaken these plastic grocery bags as for one of their favorite meals- JELLYFISH 🪼 When they ingest these bags, they feel full and will stop eating. So remember those reusable bags, ask for 📄 or skip the bag entirely!

All conservation work for endangered sea turtles at and on Topsail Island is authorized by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, ES Permit 23ST05.

This is why we work so hard to keep the Rooney Bin perfect! Our latest review: "We were very pleased with the property. It is well maintained and spotless. The personal touch with the house decorations is outstanding, making for a comfortable stay. If you are a cook, you will not be lacking for any utensil or lot or pan. The owner checked in with us during our stay to make sure everything was working properly. We had an issue with the TV reception with a "big game" coming up and she made sure it was solved promptly. We have fallen in love with the Rooney Bin."

From our latest renter:
The Rooney Bin is a fabulous house! You walk in and immediately feel like you are home. There is everything you need and more! I've never stayed in a vrbo so well equipped! The beach is very close and an easy walk. Our favorite part of the house was the porch! So comfortable. I cannot leave out the area under the house. A perfect place to spend time. I can't say enough good things about our stay! We would absolutely stay there again! Now my favorite house on Edisto!!!

Oh my.

Happy Monday! Fun fact of the day: all species of sea turtle hatchlings have a keratinized projection on their beak called a caruncle, otherwise known as an egg tooth.

Hatchlings use this egg tooth to pierce the shell when emerging from the egg, which starts the process known as pipping. Over time, the hatchling outgrows the egg tooth, and it becomes a much smaller part of the turtle’s beak.

Take a look at the caruncle on this loggerhead sea turtle hatchling! This great shot was taken by our biologist Jeff Guertin. 🐢

I am not sure who wrote this, but I LOVE it: My least favorite part of living in the south by far: the bugs. Perhaps the worst of them all is the Palmetto bug, also commonly referred to around here as the wood roach, water bug, or Satan.
These are giant cockroaches that…wait for it…FLY. They don’t care how clean your home is. They don’t care about your feelings at all. While they aren’t harmful, they’re here on this earth for one purpose only: to ruin your life. They are more commonly seen around areas that are close to the woods or water. But you are bound to see them regardless.
Here’s my pep talk if you run into one of these jerks in your house. They’re fast, don’t take your eye off them. They’re tough, do NOT try to squash one with a tissue. You will cry. I’m speaking from experience. You will need a shoe and the bravery of your ancestors to kill them. Good luck, soldier.

SAM ADAMS is back!! He was our contractor who put the Rooney Bin in business...knocked out walls, handled all problems with confidence: "No problem, Ms. Rooney"--his mantra! Most honest person I know! He's back with a new business. And I'm glad.

I don't think I'll EVER get tired of the reviews our guests leave for the Rooney Bin!
"Thank you so much for such an amazing week. We loved your house. During our time in Edisto we found sharks teeth, watched dolphins play on the surf and got to experience 53 turtles make their way into the ocean. Edisto and the Rooney Bin is a truly special place."

Asking for folks who rent their Edisto homes on Airbnb and VRBO...what home insurance do you use? Both platforms provide pretty decent liability insurance, but we'll need homeowners'. Has anyone used North Light? Allstate recommended them. Our insurance wasn't renewed, and we're shopping!

Edisto Beach State Park Turtle Specialist, Leah Schwartzentruber, announced the first turtle nest for the Park of the season occurred last night. Leah adopted nest 1 in memory of Bill Andrews for his support of the park and the turtle program. Andrews died in January of this year.

Nest 1 was laid by a loggerhead sea turtle. Upon finding the location of the egg chamber, one egg was taken for research as a part of a genetics study through the University of Georgia. The study has been ongoing in South Carolina since 2010. From this egg sample, they are able to determine the mother’s DNA so they can track her nests throughout the season and years. This study reveals valuable information regarding the loggerhead sea turtles.

This nest was situated above the high tide line, so no relocation was necessary. This nest is now protected with a number sign, a loggerhead protection sign, and a predator screen to deter raccoons from digging into the nest. Once the nest hatches, a nest inventory will be conducted to determine the nest success.
