Our friend Paulette went down to Edisto yesterday, to check on her house, and stoped by ours as well. Everything looks fine! A little sand clean up, and we should be good to go! We were very lucky!

Thanks for everyone’s concern for our house at Edisto Beach. It may be several days until we can get there to assess the situation, but no one has sent us or posted any pics of the house, which is actually a good sign. LOL
At the very least, I presume there was flooding under the house, and probably a lot of sand to clean up.
It appears that at least two tornadoes did hit the beach. One at the northern end that damaged the gas station, Coots, and McConkeys among other things. And another at the southern end down near Whaleys.
Hopefully no one was injured, and we hope that all of yall are safe as well.

A week is never enough. Not enough time to tackle all the maintenance… not enough time to visit all the restaurants and bars I want to… not enough time to take all the walks, visit all the sites, do everything I want to… even if it’s a nap in the hammock.
Not enough days to eat all of the food we brought, or read all the books we have.
Certainly not enough time to tire of the ocean’s melodic roar, or the way the afternoon sun tints the foam and whitecap waves that lovely golden hue, or glistens off a bronze body walking the beach. That never gets old.
So it’s a good thing that I can always come back. Edisto always leaves me wanting more.

"Wrinkles only go where the smiles have been" ~ Jimmy Buffet

I was shocked and saddened this morning to read about the loss of America’s favorite sailor-poet. It appears many others feel the same. I’ve always been a Buffet fan, but it feels like I’ve lost a friend… whose music has been the soundtrack to much of my life… both appreciating and imitating his outlook and philosophy.
Yes, I spent many years wasted away in Margaritaville. I’ve enjoyed many cheeseburgers in paradise… and was even a pirate at 40… or maybe 30…

It’s been a few years since I included Jimmy in my rogues gallery of fantasy guests for the tiki bar here at my house on Edisto Beach, but I thought of him fondly today as I rode out to the beach with the top down and his songs at full volume.

Between the King high tide, and Idalia, the water breached over our four foot berm this evening, and has been lapping at the sea wall under the house.
Thankfully, I think the worst is past us.

Haven’t seen a view like that in years. Not since they built the berm. That area used to be a few feet lower and level with the beach. It wasn’t uncommon for high tides to reach columns back then. I’ll be out next week, and can’t wait to see it.

What a GREAT week at Edisto Beach. Fabulous weather, and wonderful friends. The tides have been very high in the afternoon this week, driving us up against the berm during the golden hours of early evening. My favorite time of day on the beach. As we sit here, enjoying the final happy hour of our vacation, chumming the water with watermelon rinds and boiled peanut shells, I can’t help but feel regret at having to leave tomorrow. But as the light fades, and the breeze picks up, I’m warmed by the fond memories of a week well spent.

People sometimes ask about my process for producing the illustrations I create. It's not that different from the traditional method used by artist for millennia. It starts with inspiration, add some imagination, factor in a little composition and color decisions, and work it until it feels right. Working digitally, I have the great benefit of being able to try different things on the fly and hit the undo button if I don't like it. It lends itself to a more fluid approach, perhaps, than it would having to plan it all out in advance. THIS new piece, for High Tide at Edisto Beach for instance, started with just liking the way the ocean was splashing up on the jetty in front of the house... which turns out to be just a very small aspect of the final scene. Negligible, really, compared to the other elements I ended up adding to make the story... but that is where my imagination took me. I think that Michelangelo is credited with saying that the figure was already IN the stone, he just released it. Often my work feels that way too. Sometimes I may not know where I'm going... but I usually like it when I get there!

Typically I use my own photos as the basis of my artwork. But in this instance, I saw this barn image and was immediately drawn to it. It reminds me so much of Edisto and the Lowcountry that I've created this illustration that is new but hearkens back to a simpler time. This is one of several prints that I will premier at the Grace Church Tea Room this year. I'm calling this one, "Barn Girl". And as usual, I've added in lots of animals to look for. Some are obvious, but see if you can find the cat and squirrels.

There are good reviews... and then there are great reviews. Admittedly, this woman is a friend of mine, and a previous STR manger herself, so she knows what points will resonate. But this is just lovely, and much appreciated..... "I took a solo retreat to this wonderful beachfront cottage. With my stressful life, it was just what the doctor ordered! John and Debbie had thought of everything. Fully stocked kitchen - from cookware to coffee to cocktail glasses! Some picnic supplies are stocked in the pantry, behind a farmhouse screen door. The great room is spacious and warm, with fantastic views of the beach! Light floods every room over hardwood floors throughout. Plenty of seating for family and friends and a big roomy table for all! The colorful touches and cozy decor bring all the comforts of home, with a full invitation to fun! The shelves are stocked with games and books, and there’s also a nice sized TV ( if you must.) The bedrooms are clean and comfortable with soft linens and deep pillows. Two bedrooms face the ocean and the other two have extra sleeping with sturdy bunk beds in addition to full beds in both. The three bathrooms are updated and all very clean - hotel quality towels are stacked high in each. The back porch is spacious and wide with panoramic views of the sea. Great spot for sunbathing, cocktails, and kids playing games. There’s a whirlpool bath down below with a wonderful shaded area complete with game tables and chairs. I picked up some groceries at the little Bi-Lo around the corner, which was clean and organized. There are a few restaurants along that way as well. I ordered takeout from Ella & Ollie's - make sure you get their directions; GPS will take you to the wrong gate! The food was delectable. Edisto is small and unstuffy and slightly off the beaten path. It’s quieter than the Charleston beaches and has a beauty all its own, with its mossy oaks and small town appeal. And it’s less than an hour’s scenic drive from Charleston. I highly recommend Edisto and this charming southern beachfront cottage - any time of year. An inspiring entry to your book of memories."
