It's a mystery why the "mystery tree" is decorated with lights when light pollution is a growing problem. Migratory birds and all kind of nocturnal animals need a dark sky. Please keep the lights to a minimum. There is no reason to decorate a natural object in a beautiful view-scape with plastic trash and lights. Calling Miss Pearl....
Mercy my, Babe! We’re getting alot of media interest these days! Palmetto Life came to see us this month and is coming back in July!!
Team effort: Big Bear Roofing, Hutchinson Heritage Foundation, the beloved home owner (this wasn’t charity- we all contributed- it was a community “roof raising”), Marvelous Meals by Marvetta, and life-long Edisto Beach visitors made this possible!!
A well-loved figure on Edisto Island has a new roof thanks to organizations who have wanted to make a difference in the Gullah Geechee community.
It is an honor to partner with Greg Estevez to share Edisto Island’s history. Recent research has reminded us of the unjust practices after Reconstruction when land was stripped from freed people. Greg joins the researcher behind “40 Acres and a Lie” the podcast about this research.

Edisto and our history is on national news these days- as it should be….
Journalist Alexia Fernández Campbell says some freed men and women were given titles to land following the Civil War -- but after President Lincoln's death, the land was taken back.
On our tour called The African American Journey in collaboration with author Greg Estevez we talk about “40 acres and a mule” and what it meant for Edisto. Take the time to listen to this podcast. It’s a hard history we should all know.
Our historical investigation found 1,250 formerly enslaved Black Americans who were given land – only to see it returned to their enslavers.

It is a moment of reconnecting, remembering and acknowledging family history on Edisto Island.
Tree frogs have specialized skin cells, called chromatophores, which allow them to change colors rapidly, depending on their surroundings, emotions, and environmental and physiological factors. This green tree frog (Hyla cinerea) is warming up in a black pipe and I’ve never seen one so dark before- almost matching the pipe.
We have seats open on tomorrow’s (3/13) public Dolphin Ecotour. Today we saw one pod feeding on the outgoing tide. Book online and join the adventure!

Sea Island cooking starts with fresh, local ingredients right from our waterways! Blue crab, fish and shrimp are abundant around Edisto Island. But we also serve land based proteins- chicken, okra gumbo and more!

Here comes the big rain. On the radar it looks like it is decreases in intensity so maybe this will be it….
If you have time during the holiday season, leave us a review of your ecotour. It helps us out as a small business so think of it as your gift to us! We appreciate it.

Dragons indeed! If you can find a way to read this, it’s something for folks living along the coast to contemplate…
The combined threat of climate change and development in risky areas is making it a big challenge to keep coastal Carolina residents safe.
I met Rudy Manke when I was 12 and there was a cotton rat explosion at Edisto Beach. He stopped in a white, convertible MG with the top down and asked if I had seen any. I wanted to ride in that car so I hopped in not knowing who he was, but he knew about cotton rats and was in a cool car. When we pulled up at my house my grandmother came out onto the porch and I thought I was done for since she saw me getting out of a stranger’s car. But she said, “Hello, Rudy Manke.” He was already on TV and she was a regular watcher of his show NatureScene. After that I attended some of his nature walks and public programs and was honored many years later to lead a walk with him as a colleague. He is an environmental education icon and he will be missed. -Capt Meg

Beauty of a fox squirrel. (Sorry for the camera movement.) Because they like an open understory below the trees they are common where long leaf pine forests are managed with fire- which opens up the understory but leave the canopy intact. #foxsquirrel #virtualsciencelesson #edistoisland #lowcountry

Hey y’all, Capt Meg here. Big Bear roofing replaced my roof 2 years ago and worked with us to replace a roof for an Island senior. I highly recommend them- quality work and great customer service. They are ready to help out on Edisto. Call or text Dallas (843) 452-9201. #debby #edistobeach @bigbearroofing
Here’s the scoop I know (and it’s an island so the coconut telegraph is rarely accurate), tornado damage in spots from the 2600 block down to Pavilion/Coots. McConkeys and Coots and several homes were hit hard. Law Enforcement performed 19 rescues last night in the flood waters getting people out of damaged houses. No major injuries. Jungle Rd and Palmetto Blvd are both blocked so no coming and going, stay put, don’t drive around anymore is the word from emergency services. Rain is expected to continue so waters will continue to rise. #debby #edistobeach
