When the 18th Century Comes to the Rescue
When a pair of sailors sent out a distress call after their rudder broke, they never expected a giant wooden ship from the 1700s to come to their rescue. The two men on the sailboat Corto were about 50 nautical miles off the coast of northern France when they found themselves stranded and drifting in the water. The closest ship was the Gotheborg of Sweden - the largest ocean-going wooden sailing ship in the world. As the stranded sailors watched the massive 18th century merchant ship from the East India Company approach, they wondered if they were hallucinating or had slipped through a time portal. The crew of the Götheborg diverted course and spent several hours towing the stranded sailors and their craft to a port in Paimpol, France. The crew of the Götheborg waited until the rescue vessel arrived and ensured that Moeneclaey and his friend, Simon were safe. A few days later, the sailors got in touch with the crew of the Götheborg, thanked them for the help, and shared several photos.

What an INCREDIBLE season of color in our local Borrego Desert! On all of our trips we stopped at the famous Dudley's Bakery in Santa Ysabel to purchase fresh baked specialties and browse their wonderful gift shop. Then, we continued to the quaint former gold mining town of Julian, where we browsed the many fabulous shops and indulged in a slice of famous Julian apple pie. Next, we descended into Borrego Springs to visit some locations where artist Ricardo Breceda's fascinating giant metal sculptures of prehistoric creatures dot the desert floor and visited the Borrego Springs Visitor Center and Museum. This is an annual springtime tradition that never disappoints!

The Dispilio Tablet, discovered in 1993 near Lake Kastoria, Greece, challenges conventional archaeology’s view that writing originated in Sumeria around 3000–4000 BCE. Dated to 5260 BCE through radiocarbon analysis, this wooden tablet predates Sumerian writing by thousands of years. It bears a cryptic inscription, possibly an early form of communication or record-keeping, which remains undeciphered. Professor George Hourmouziadis, who led the discovery, suggested the symbols might represent counting or possessions, hinting at an advanced Neolithic society. This finding raises questions about the timeline of writing's development and suggests that the ancient Greeks may have had a writing system long before influences from Middle Eastern civilizations.

Ancient Artifacts Found in Norway's Melting Ice

As glaciers in Norway melt due to rising temperatures, they’ve revealed an extraordinary treasure trove of ancient artifacts. Archaeologists have discovered thousands of well-preserved items, including weapons, clothing, and tools, some dating back as far as 6,000 years.

One of the most remarkable finds is a collection of arrows, some with intact feathers and bindings, emerging from the ice. These arrows range in age from the Stone Age to the medieval period, providing a continuous record of human activity. As the animals sought refuge from biting insects on icy patches, hunters would lose arrows in the snow — only for them to be preserved for millennia.

In addition to arrows, researchers have found wooden skis with leather bindings from around 1,300 years ago, woven textiles, and even shoes from the Iron Age. There are also horse remains that suggest people were traveling through these icy passes for trade or migration.

The artifacts offer a rare glimpse into ancient life, showing how people adapted to and thrived in extreme environments. They also highlight the urgency of recovery efforts: as the ice melts, these objects are exposed to the elements and decay rapidly if not collected in time.

In 1789, the crew of the British ship HMS Bounty, led by Fletcher Christian, famously mutinied against their captain, William Bligh, near Tahiti. The crew had spent several months in Tahiti, where they formed close bonds with the locals and fell in love with the island’s beauty and way of life. When Bligh attempted to sail the ship back to England, tensions boiled over. Christian and his fellow mutineers seized the ship, set Bligh and loyal crew members adrift in a small boat, and returned to Tahiti.

Some of the mutineers later settled on Pitcairn Island, bringing Tahitian companions with them. Against all odds, Bligh and his small crew of loyalists spent 45 days navigating more than 3,600 miles in a small open boat to safety. They survived on one ounce of bread and three swigs of water a day until they arrived on the island of Timor off the coast of Australia where they reported the mutiny to British authorities.

Today, descendants of the mutineers and Tahitians still live on Pitcairn Island, and the story has become legendary, immortalized in books and films. Remnants of the original HMS Bounty ship are also on display on Pitcairn Island, including one of the original anchors, the ship's bell and a cannon. Meanwhile, Tahiti remains a symbol of paradise — the place that captured the hearts of the Bounty crew and changed their fates forever.

Emily’s Bridge in Stowe, Vermont
Haunted or An Old Wives' Tale?

This historic bridge, officially called Gold Brook Covered Bridge, was built in the early 1800s and is said to be haunted by the ghost of a young woman named Emily. According to local lore, Emily was a young woman who planned to elope with her lover. They agreed to meet at the bridge, but he never showed up. Heartbroken, Emily allegedly died by su***de at the bridge. Some say she hung herself from one of the bridge's rafters, others say she drowned herself in the river below. Whatever the case, her restless spirit is said to linger there.

Today, Emily’s Bridge is quite the paranormal hotspot for those who visit. Everything from lights to apparitions to neck pain and even long bodily scratches have appeared to those who’ve dared to cross Emily and her bridge. Between midnight and 3 a.m. are said to be the most active times. Tales of claw-like gouges down the sides of cars and other ghastly stories surround the bridge, including those of a strange voice emanating from inside the short tunnel.

Renowned ghost-investigators and even the Travel Channel have featured the location in videos, podcasts, articles — you name it. Local historians, however, argue the story is simply an old wives' tale and have not found any record or evidence of any deaths on or near the bridge. But, there are many locals who still take "the long way home" to avoid Emily's Bridge.

Wild Bison of Białowieża Forest in Belarus
One of Europe’s last and largest remaining primeval forests, Białowieża Forest straddles the border between Belarus and Poland. This ancient forest is home to the European bison, the continent’s heaviest land animal.

By the early 20th century, European bison were nearly extinct due to overhunting. After World War I, not a single wild bison remained in Białowieża. But thanks to conservation efforts, including a breeding program that began with just a few animals in captivity, the species made a comeback. Today, Białowieża is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the forest hosts hundreds of wild bison roaming freely.

The forest also holds deep historical significance — it served as a private hunting ground for Polish kings, Russian tsars, and even N**i leaders during World War II. Despite the scars of history, the forest endures as a symbol of resilience and the power of nature’s revival, with Belarus playing a crucial role in preserving this unique ecosystem.

"My husband and I just returned from an unforgettable 3-day trip to Death Valley, and I can’t recommend it enough! Every day was filled with stunning views and natural wonders. We stayed at The Oasis at Death Valley, a charming ranch-style resort right in the heart of the park, which made exploring super convenient. From the salt formations at Devil’s Golf Course to the rolling dunes that seemed to shift colors with the sunlight, every stop offered something unique. The snow-capped peaks made for breathtaking contrasts, and the panoramic views of the canyons and colorful badlands were simply spectacular. The highlight, though, was the night sky. We saw an explosion of stars — it felt like you could reach out and touch the Milky Way. The trip was a perfect blend of history, geology, and natural beauty, and I loved learning about the park’s diverse ecosystem. Death Valley is full of life and surprises, and this tour showcased the best of it. If you’re looking for a unique adventure with incredible scenery and starlit magic, this is the trip to take!"
