Today we will see if April comes in like a lion or not. It looks like the biggest threat is for this evening. As we always ask, please have multiple ways to receive your weather alerts and have a plan. If you haven’t cleaned out your storm shelter, today might be the day to do it.

It looks like today’s forecast has recently been upgraded. Please be weather aware and have your weather alerts active. It’s that time of year in Oklahoma.

Updated severe risk for today. Upgraded much of northwest through west-central OK to Enhanced category while extended Slight risk further south and east into northern TX & OKC metro. Update was due to increasing hail hazard but size remains the same. Please view the graphic attached to this posting.

Looks like a pretty serious situation for our friends to the east.

A severe weather outbreak appears increasingly likely this afternoon and evening, across a large portion of the Mississippi Valley and into the lower Ohio and Tennessee Valleys. At least a few long-track, strong to potentially violent tornadoes are probable, particularly over portions of the Mid-Mississippi Valley to the Mid-South. Swaths of intense damaging wind gusts along with very large hail are expected as well.

Thursdays seem to be Haildays this month. Please plan ahead.

...IAN CAUSING CATASTROPHIC STORM SURGE, WINDS, AND FLOODING IN THE FLORIDA PENINSULA...

At 200 PM EDT (1800 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Ian was located by an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft and Tampa radar data about 50 miles south-southwest of Punta Gorda, Florida. Ian is moving toward the north-northeast near 9 mph (15 km/h). This general motion with a reduction in forward speed is forecast today, followed by a turn toward the northeast on Thursday. On the forecast track, the center of Ian is expected to move onshore soon, move over central Florida tonight and Thursday morning and emerge over the western Atlantic by late Thursday. Ian is forecast to turn northward on Friday and approach the northeastern Florida coast in addition to the Georgia and South Carolina coasts late Friday.

Maximum sustained winds remain near 155 mph (250 km/h) with higher gusts. Ian is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Ian is forecast to make landfall on the west
coast of Florida as a catastrophic hurricane soon. Weakening is expected after landfall, but Ian could be near hurricane strength when it moves over the Florida East coast tomorrow, and when it approaches the northeastern Florida, Georgia and South Carolina coasts late Friday.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km). A River, Estuary, and Coastal Network station at Redfish Pass, Florida, recently reported sustained winds of 94 mph (151 km/h) and a wind gust of 126 mph (203 km/h).

The minimum central pressure is 937 mb (27.67 inches) based on Air Force Reserve dropsonde data.

Visit the National Hurricane Center website at hurricanes.gov for additional forecast information on Ian.

The next complete advisory will be at 5:00 PM EDT.

It’s spring time again and that usually means spring storms. It also may mean wind and hail damage to your property. If it does, you will likely be speaking with a contractor. And while where are many very good contractors out there, you will want to be diligent in knowing who you are working with and especially what you sign. I have seen contracts that insured’s have signed with penalties for not not completing the repairs with that contractor. Something that is a more recent trend in Oklahoma but has been an ongoing issue in Florida is the Assignment of Claim or Assignment of Benefits. These contacts actually assign all proceeds and rights of your claim to the contractor leaving you very little leverage if repairs don’t go the way you expect. While it is certainly your right if you want to do this, please make sure you fully understand what you are signing. This couple in Florida does not sound happy about their decision.
