If you find yourself with an evening in Austin, make your way to the Congress Avenue Bridge around sunset. Each night, thousands of Mexican Free-Tailed Bats wake from their siesta and emerge from beneath the bridge to begin their nightly bug feast. It was quite a sight to see! The event occurs nightly from late March to early fall, with the colony growing to 1.5 millions bats at the peak in mid August, when the city hosts a Bat Fest right on the bridge! In addition to viewing from the park or the bridge, you can book a tour or rent a kayak to view from the water.
Fun facts about the Austin bats!
🦇 Each spring, the bats migrate from central Mexico to various roosts around the southwest US.
🦇 The bats eat between 10,000 and 30,000 bugs each night!
🦇 Most of the Austin bats are female.
🦇 Female bats give birth to one pup in early June.
🦇 It takes about 5 weeks for the pups to learn to fly and hunt bugs on their own.
