Louis XI, known as the "Universal Spider" for his web of political strategies, decided it was high time to streamline communication across his kingdom. His solution? A network of mounted couriers zipping around France with letters in tow. Talk about snail mail with some serious horsepower!

On this day, the legendary English navigator Sir Francis Drake landed on the coast of what we now know as California! Setting foot on a site now known as Drakes Bay, Drake claimed the land for England and whimsically named it "New Albion" (because "New England" was already taken!

Drake and his crew were probably the first Europeans to interact with the indigenous people of the area, creating a moment of cross-cultural curiosity that predates social media friend requests by centuries!

Imagine the surprise of the native Miwok people when Drake and his sea-weary crew arrived, decked out in Elizabethan finery and ready to party like it was 1579!

The British were stuck on the Rock of Gibraltar, turning it into a fortress that even Game of Thrones would envy. Meanwhile, the Spanish and French were determined to claim the rock for themselves.

This Day in History: June 14, 1777
