Ellinwood’s Underground Tunnels Receive State Tourism Grant
The Ellinwood Underground City Foundation is celebrating a major step forward in preserving the town’s unique 19th-century underground tunnels. The organization has been awarded an Attraction Development Grant of $18,842.80 from the state, designed to provide strategic economic assistance to enhance tourism attractions that create jobs, boost revenue, and increase visitation.
State Grant with Matching Funds
Representatives from Lieutenant Governor David Toland’s Department of Commerce recently visited Ellinwood to present the grant, which comes with a40% match requirement. The grant will fund improvements to the Orientation Room, located across the street from the Historic Wolf Hotel, where the primary entrance to the underground tunnels will be established. Now, the Ellinwood Underground City Foundation must raise the remaining 60% of the project’s cost to complete this important enhancement.
Preserving Ellinwood’s History
The Ellinwood Underground Tunnels, a rare 19th-century feature, offer visitors a glimpse into the town’s vibrant past. These tunnels, originally used by businesses, include stops at historic locations such as a harness shop, barbershop, bathhouse, and underground storefronts beneath the Wolf Hotel. Around 3,000 visitors annually take part in these tours, making them a cornerstone of Ellinwood’s tourism industry.
Rick Casagrande, President of the Ellinwood Underground City Foundation, highlighted the importance of the tunnels:
“The Underground Tunnel Tours are the heart of our history in Ellinwood. They are vital to our community and its story, and we must ensure they are preserved for future generations.”
Orientation Center: A Key Component
The grant will help restore and convert a garage attached to the west side of the Deck Building into a welcoming orientation center for the underground tours. This new space will provide historical context and prepare visitors for their underground journey, significantly enhancing the tour experience.
“Our successful October fundraiser The Haunted Living History Revelry, combined with this state grant, marks a significant step forward for our new organization,” said Casagrande. “We’re using 2025 as a learning year to determine how to maintain and preserve the tunnels and how to operate efficiently in the future.”
Economic and Tourism Impact
Tourism, including attractions like the underground tunnels, has a profound economic impact on Ellinwood. Visitors contribute to local businesses, generate tax revenue, and help sustain the community’s economy. Every dollar spent by tourists creates a ripple effect, benefiting the entire town while preserving its historical charm.
Community Support Needed
To meet the grant’s matching requirements and fund the remaining 60% of the project, the foundation is calling on the community for support. Here’s how you can help:
• Make a Donation to the Foundation: Financial contributions are crucial to preserving this historical treasure.
• Provide In-Kind Support: Building materials and supplies are essential for the orientation center’s restoration.
• Volunteer Your Time: Skilled woodworkers and other volunteers can donate their expertise to help complete the project.
