Ice out could happen this week!
It's always an exciting time when the lake opens up each spring. Can't wait to see it happen in person-we set up our lake cam just for this purpose and then just as last guests were leaving-all the Wi-Fi went kaput! Offline!

Panic! Call sister to go over to problem solve. Technician needed. Make appointment for next morning and arrange for brother-in-law to be there. Wi-Fi back on. The important stuff back online: Thermostat back on. Smart TV back on. Door lock still accepting codes but isn't online. Cameras still offline.
New guests arrived safely. Disaster avoided thanks to our awesome support team. (The woes of remote hosting from five hours away.)
Thankfully, in five years of hosting, no issue has been too big--Wind storm power outages, trees downed, canoe blown away. Gracious guests and my sister and brother-in-law have always have helped.
So, we may not see ice out happen on the new lake cam, but our current guests are safe and warm and have Wi-Fi That's a win.
This video is from ice out a few years ago(you can see the ice on the top half of the screen). My friend and I were sitting at the end of the dock, watching the gorgeous sunset, and two beaver quietly swam by. I wasn't planning on filming, but she was silently gesturing for me to capture the moment. Because if it's not on Instagram, it didn't happen, right?
Tag your support team and give them a shout out below.
Thanks @heathermckfitz and @fitz1951 ! you bring us peace of mind.

Where's is the only float plane base operated by the US Forest Service?
Ely, Minnesota and only steps from the cabin.
Three de Havilland Beaver planes were purchased new between 1956 and 1959. They are just as gorgeous today and because of their beauty, as thrilling to see parked on the water as they are to see in the sky. We always stop to gawk.
Beavers can scoop water into a 125-gallon tank and drop it on fires. They are also used for wildlife radio tracking, search and rescue, stocking lakes with fish, recon, medivac, and cargo.
This video was taken by Rich while we were walking through the neighborhood. It was the last flight on skis before the lake opened.
Ain't she a beauty?

Two years ago today, I woke up to our own National Geographic Channel on our Nest security camera.
The hill from the lake is steep and rocky. No idea how far the deer had run before coming up the hill, but that wolf gained serious ground.
I love looking at how big the wolf's paws are in the slo-mo footage and how casual the second wolf is about catching up.
We like to think that off camera, the director yelled, "Cut!" and everyone caught their breath and chatted about how their fight or flight motivation was caught on film.
Recently a guest wrote about a wolf chase a fox on the lake and watching it from the living room window.
We have yet to see a wolf in real time.
🐺🐾And don't worry. Wolves have their own agenda that doesn't involve attacking humans. Promise.

Week 19 of #thehostcollaborativeweek19 challenge: "Must-Dos during the Holidays"
Unwinding in the open air is definitely an Ely, Minnesota holiday must-do.
Regardless of record breaking cold temperatures, Ely locals cultivate a positive wintertime mindset and believe in true Scandinavian fashion that
"There’s no bad weather, only bad clothing."
In other words, "Bundle up and get outside!"
From ely.org Ely Tourism website:
"Here are Seven Reasons Why Winter in Ely Is Going to Win You Over.
Dog Sledding
-Ely area dog sled outfitters offer day trips, multi-day lodge-to-lodge journeys, trips geared for ice fishing or weeklong camping excursions. We are signed up to go on Monday with @chillysleddog
Snowmobiling
-With its varied terrain and beautiful views, the 86-mile Tomahawk Trail is one of the most scenic in the state. This remote trail runs through the majestic Superior National Forest and gives riders incredible views of lakes, rivers and scenic overlooks.
Cross-country Skiing
-Ely’s ski season begins in early December and lasts through April— longer than anywhere else in Minnesota. You’ll find over 140 kilometers of groomed or user-tracked trails that vary from groomed shorelines to winding and rolling trails through towering birch and pine forests.
Ice Fishing
-Many resorts and motels, guides and dogsled outfitters offer ice fishing packages that include everything from a heated ice house or portable shelter to equipment and tackle to guided fishing trips
Snowshoeing
-The beauty of snowshoeing is it allows you to venture to areas that cross-country skiers and snowmobilers can’t reach. (McJoppa, The Hut has four pairs of adult snow shoes and two for anyone under 90 pounds)
Winter Events
-One of the largest winter events is the Ely Winter Festival, which is held for 10 days every February. This festival features a Snow Sculpting Symposium, an exhibition in which local and international snow carvers turn snow into works of art.

Big snow predicted for tomorrow! One weather model says 6" of snow and another says 18". 🥶
❄️🎄Only three more sleeps until we head up for one week long Winter Break. (Gah!! Who's sleeping these days?!)
