Sea turtle nesting season in North Carolina is in full swing! Volunteers with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission NC Sea Turtle Project, walk on the beaches early in the morning along the coast, looking for tracks like these from May until October. These tracks were left by a nesting mother a few years ago. Loggerheads are the most common sea turtles that nest on the Crystal Coast. They can lay up to 120 eggs in one nest!
It's easy to help out hatchlings and nesting mothers. Pick up trash, fill in holes, bring in beach equipment like chairs and tents, turn out ocean-facing lights or close blinds. Using wildlife-friendly lights on ocean-facing properties helps sea turtles navigate easily toward the ocean instead of the dunes.
