Bald Eagles are magnificent birds. An adult Bald Eagle can have a wingspan of more than 6ft. However, they are opportunistic feeders and love to turn our free-range chickens into an " ALL YOU CAN EAT BUFFET." With laying hens costing between $50-75 dollars apiece, depending on the breed, it is expensive to replace our "girls." Our farm hand Cody is working hard to put up overhead netting to discourage the eagles and encourage the "girls", to stay out of the hen-house during the day.

Today, 9-22-2022, is the day of the autumnal equinox. Notice the dark band extending from the north pole to the south pole. This is only happens when earth is at one of its two equinoxes. And, now the amount of daylight shortens each day. 😔 Hurry up 3-20-2023

"Sad night last night but today is a brighter day. The ewe (female sheep) on the left lambed a stillborn and we were unable to resuscitate it. She cried most of the night longing for her lamb after we removed it.

The ewe on the right lambed twins last week, though they were very small. It seems that today she has given one of her twins to the grieving mother to raise as her own. This is a photo of them together with their new children."

Most people forget Seattle is surrounded by mountains. Don't let the picture fool you; this is not Mt. Rainier. It’s Mt. Baker, lined up behind Seattle's most iconic landmark, the Space Needle. The photo was taken from the parking lot of Mount St. Vincent senior care facility in Seattle. This picture requires a super clear day and a telephoto lens, as Mt. Baker is 100 miles from Seattle.

The projected opening for Mt. Rainier from HWY 410 is late June. Yes, we’ve had a cold winter with lots of recent snow, but the wait will be worth it. A simple hike, at Sunrise Lodge, is the Skyline Train Loop with Myrtle Falls, a scenic point with Mt. Rainier as the backdrop. An amazing summer hike!

If you are looking for a really fun but challenging hike near the farm? Check out "Mailbox Peak" on Rattlesnake Ridge. This is a 7.8 mile hike that gains nearly 4,000 feet in elevation, so it is definitely for "fit and experienced" hikers. At the top is a mailbox so bring a pen and paper and leave a note for future hikers. You may notice the Mountain goat in the picture has a collar, he is not a pet, it is a tracking collar, provided by the US Forest Service to keep track of a relocated herd. As always tag a plastic bag and pack out what you pack in!

It's that time of year when guests start asking about hiking trails in the area, and one of my favorites on a warm spring day is the Chirico Trail to Poo Poo Point. Not only are the views spectacular but at the top of Poo Poo Point, you will find the best hang gliding location around. Take a lunch because you are going to want to "Hang Around" for a while. And as always, take a garbage bag with you, and if you pack it in, pack it out! Click on pictures for full size!

Kids love to search the hen house for eggs while staying on the farm, and they are always surprised to find different color eggs….white, green, brown and an occasional chocolate. Beyond the shell color, what's the difference? Nothing, all the yolks and whites look the same and have the same nutritional value.
