With its impenetrable canyons, Utah's Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument defies human perspective and remains a mystery even to those who know it best.

Sometimes there is water…red water. Canyon Tip: Always wear footwear that encloses the foot the entire way around. The red water prevents us from being able to see sharp objects that could injure feet. For a great day, think Safety First.

PHF 22 was a heck of an adventure! Rain….flooding…. the first ever closing of Hole in The Rock Road…..it all conspired to dull the Festival Spirit. But great Teamwork led to many excellent choices, allowing us to get out and safely play in the canyons of Escalante each day of the Fest. Uuuutaaaahhhh!!!

Canyon conditions were in “full pool” mode with non-funky water to play in, and was even topped off with fresh flood water Saturday night. Air temps were perfect, and days were spent getting in and out of potholes of many varieties, bypassing some or repeating others…. it was a game of pick and choose according to your level of interest, enthusiasm and the clouds. Since there’s usually no shortage of motivated canyoneers or awesome Leader-Instructors available, folks seemed to stay quite busy in the canyons and come back with a nice smile and an air of confidence. The afternoons were spent eating ice cream on the patio, swapping stories about storm cells that drifted by and washing gear for the next round of adventures. Saturday night we shared a delicious catered dinner together and then got started on our 4th annual Pot Shot Competition, which was more fun times. We added 2 new categories that "evened things up" a bit and it felt like everyone had a chance to give it a real good try. It felt like lots of folks surprised themselves at how well they did after just a little practice. Austin as MC is always fun! Sunday wrapped up with a few folks going home early, but many sticking around for the best (then worse:) weather of the Fest. Good canyon choices on the final day brought us all back safely to the shop in time for one more round of ice cream and warm buh-bye’s with old and new friends.

A big thank you to our crew of Volunteer Leaders-Instructors who dedicate extraordinary time and energy to make our events a safe, fun and educational experience. Rebecca Haacke, Austin Haacke, Eric Young, Gus Carrillo, Brent McCormick, Constance Cooley, Dave Krumacher……much appreciation, much respect!!! An extra special thank you to Amie Fortin for so much of the critical work and organization that is done behind the scenes. Without you it does not happen. xoxoxo.
And of course, a final thank you to ALL of PHF 22’ Attendee’s, every single person contributed to our success.

*Another great PHF achievement: As per Amie’s decree, Austin Haacke is now among the select few who are officially authorized to stand behind the counter in the shop!:) Congratulations!!

As people descend on public parks and lands each summer, the number of potential backcountry accidents increases. Being well-prepared and informed about an area you're visiting will lower the chances of an incident while also helping lower your impact on fragile environments.
