WELCOME TO THE TEAM: The choice of a medical career was ignited by her parents’ aspirations. However, it was during college experiences that Judy discovered the multifaceted nature of being a doctor. Her journey through medical school allowed her to integrate her love for anatomy, medical illustration, and surgical pathology, leading to her present-day career in breast cancer surgery. This field enables her to embrace the challenges and rewards of operative disease removal, aesthetics, and the visual communication of these concepts to her patients through medical drawings.

Judy treasures the genuine connections she’s made with the down-to-earth, fun-loving people of Northeast Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, and she’s delighted to be back in the state she called home for over twenty years with friends now considered family.

"Share with me your goals, and together we will find a treatment algorithm that meets your needs."

NATIONAL RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS DAY: “There is real behind the health benefits of acts of . Performing an act of kindness has been proven to increase release of the "love hormone" associated with social bonds and connection, increased the "feel good" chemical messenger in the brain and increased serotonin which is directly associated with mood. Kindness can even lower your .

In addition to improved self-esteem, empathy and compassion and loneliness, MRI images have demonstrated kindness can positively impact your brain. Studies have shown even observing acts of kindness can improve mood, moral, decrease negative thoughts, depression, and loneliness.

Most can look back in their own lives and remember a time when an act of kindness done for them made a lasting impact even years later. Even the practice of remembering the feelings one felt when receiving kindness can boost one's mood and compassion.

Embracing our own humanness with kindness, approaching our own self with compassion, support and speaking gently to ourselves, can be the greatest act of kindness of all.

www.randomactsofkindness.org has daily suggestions of many acts of kindness, including ways to teach and promote kindness at school, work and at home.” - Dr. Ruth Warren (and sons)

NATIONAL HOUSEPLANT APPRECIATION DAY: “Despite the cold weather, I am still able to enjoy in the winter by tending to my indoor plants. Besides adding some beauty to indoor spaces, houseplants offer a number of other benefits. They help purify the air, reduce stress levels, increase humidity in dry environments, as well as lower carbon dioxide levels. My favorite plant is my , also known as a prayer . It opens its leaves during the day and closes them in the evening, perhaps as a way of absorbing moisture and catching rain. If you are ever in Milwaukee, be sure to check out my favorite plant store, STUMP.” - Dr. Barbi Kaplan-Frenkel 🪴🌱

HOPE VS HONESTY: This week we discuss the importance of transparent and honest discussions with cancer patients about their prognosis and treatment options.

It is crucial to be honest with patients and not give false hope, as this can lead to unnecessary treatments and emotional harm. We also discussed the importance of ongoing patient conversations about their prognosis and treatment options and the need to respect each patient’s hopes and goals.

“I have been passionate about oncology ever since I was a little girl, when my mom was diagnosed with stage 2 Melanoma when I was six, which was a very scary situation being that young. NEW YEAR, NEW NAME: Though much has changed since our founding, our mission to bring cancer care close to home for our patients never has. It's because of that mission that we plan to change our name in the coming months.

Cancer doesn't have a zip code. It affects people everywhere. And though we're proud of our roots in Green Bay, we now serve other communities as well. So it's time our name matched our mission.

With that in mind, we thought we'd share this encore episode titled "Our Mission" while we're taking a break from production to celebrate and reflect with our loved ones this week.

We hope you'll enjoy it, and wish you and your loved ones a very Happy New Year.

“Watching the people I love pass away from ultimately helped me recognize that I wanted to be a pediatric oncology . When working with kids, I find helping them incredibly empowering, and it gives me joy knowing I can make an impact on their lives. Becoming a future pediatric oncology nurse, I’ll continue to advocate and care for children and their families going through a difficult time.” - Mikayla Miller, CNA II going for Nursing at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire

“I love caring for patients. I enjoy getting to see them often and forming relationships with them and their families. Oncology patients have a joy for life and see the positive in everything. They are always grateful and appreciative. I also like to be there for the patients and their families if or when they decide that they do not want to fight anymore. I would definitely like to continue in the oncology field as a Nurse Practitioner.” - Alisa Prochnow, RN going for Family Nurse Practitioner at Bellin College

"My family's journey with began with my grandmother's being treated at Green Bay Oncology by Dr. Michael Volk. My grandmother received spectacular personalized care, but there was another aspect of her treatment that stands out to me 20 years later. My grandfather, a German immigrant, was always able to talk to Dr. Volk about his heritage, and he responded with the utmost regard and interest in everything he had to say. My grandfather was not college educated and could not understand the medical knowledge of my grandmother's oncologists, but every doctor was willing to come down to a personal level in conversation with my grandfather. This inspires me to become an that is not only skilled in my profession, but someone who can make the patient and family experience one to remember. The biomedical science education will allow me to acquire a solid basis that will prepare me for medical school and the MCAT. A medical school education will allow me to pursue my dream of becoming an oncologist." - Emma Skaletski, CNA to Biomedical Science at Marquette University

CLINICAL TRIAL AWARDS: This year, nine of our physicians were recognized with silver and gold certificates of excellence for exceptional achievement in patient enrollments in National Cancer Institute treatment and cancer control, prevention, and screening trials. Congratulations!

Many of us who work in cancer care consider it a gift and a privilege.

The gifts that come from the work take many forms: being part of a patient's cure, helping patients live longer and better when they can't be cured – and helping them have peace and dignity if the end becomes unavoidable.

But the one that excites us the most is the constant growth of the field and evolution of the treatments. All of this is made possible by ongoing research, driven by doctors and patients alike–and it's a gift that keeps on giving.
