Laboratory tests conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) have confirmed that the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd) has been positively detected in bats found in the Holzwarth Historic Site area located on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park. This is the first confirmed detection of Pd in Grand County, Colorado.

Pd is an invasive fungus that causes white-nose syndrome (WNS), a fatal disease that impacts bats. This fungus can spread rapidly, primarily through bat-to-bat contact.

WNS does not cause illness in humans, but humans are able to spread the fungus to new places. To protect yourselves and conserve bat populations, we recommend visitors:

Report dead/injured bats to park personnel. To protect yourself and bats, never touch or pick up a bat. Although WNS does not cause illness in humans, a small percentage of bats can be infected with other dangerous diseases, such as rabies.

Decontaminate. Ensure you properly decontaminate your gear and outerwear after visiting a cave or other bat habitat.

Earlier this year, swabs taken from bats in the Holzwarth area of the park found a probability of Pd. Following this probable result, National Park Service wildlife biologists at the park collected bat guano from locations in the Holzwarth Historic Site area for follow up testing to verify the results. The results of these tests have positively detected Pd.

Any new detection of Pd is worrisome because bats are vital for healthy ecosystems. Rocky Mountain National Park is home to nine known species of bats, five of which have been found living in areas above 11,000 feet. WNS has been blamed for millions of bat deaths nationwide since its initial detection in New York State in 2006. In July 2022, the first confirmed case of WNS was reported in Southeastern Colorado. Pd and WNS have also been confirmed in Larimer County, Colorado.

❄️Right now our Winter Wonderland tour is in full swing! Take a ride in our customized, fully enclosed tour trucks with forward facing, stadium seating! They are equipped with fantastic heaters and blankets stashed throughout just incase! You will take a short walk to a partially frozen waterfall, go sledding, drink hot chocolate and walk around a frozen lake all while enjoying a cozy ride with breathtaking views! Your guide will also be giving you lots of facts about the area, the wildlife, who settled Estes Park, how RMNP came to be etc.

🌞 If you plan on coming in the Spring, Summer or Fall we have quite a few other options available! Our most popular being the Top of the World tour which takes you up to the Alpine Visitor Center located at right under 12k feet elevation. This tour also drives up Old Fall River road which opens right around the 4th of July and is by far one of the most scenic drives in Rocky Mountain National Park next to Trail Ridge road which you will drive down after leaving the Alpine Visitor Center. Our other park tours include the Sunset tour and Elk Watching tour! Both of these tours take place in the evening and stay in the lower elevations of the park.

🌲 We also offer off-road tours that are a little more exciting! These tours take you off-road through the Roosevelt National forest up Pole Hill road to the top of Panoramic Peak! On our Rockin' Roller Coaster tour, Panoramic Peak tour or Not so Mellow Marshmallow tour your guide will be doing a lot of technical driving up steep inclines, over boulders and other tight spots with a few planned stops! On all of these tours you will stop in the middle of an Aspen tree grove to learn about them, you will drive up to our private 3 story fire watch tower where you will get 360 degree views from the roof, then head over to our pavilion for water and snacks before heading down Roller Coaster Alley for a bit faster ride while blasting some AC/DC! The Not so Mellow Marshmallow tour would hang out at the pavilion while their guide builds a fire for them to roast hot dogs and make smores before heading down Roller Coaster alley in the dark! The Panoramic Peak tour is more mild and does not go down Roller Coaster Alley.
