White-tailed Ptarmigan (Lagopus leucura) are masters of disguise. Also known as snow quail, these birds are the smallest grouse in North America.

One of the ways these unique birds hide from predators is by blending in with their environment. During the winter, White-tailed Ptarmigan feathers turn to white, allowing them to blend in with the snow-covered landscape of their home in the alpine tundra.

Small avalanche near Emerald Lake this week! Stay safe, friends! We always highly recommend taking an avalanche course if you plan to hike in the snow! If you don't, our guides are trained to watch avalanche conditions. We are available in the winter to help guide your hikes! Book online at fullpotentialwilderness.com

Three snowshoers were caught in this small avalanche in Rocky Mountain National Park earlier this week while traveling on the Emerald Lake summer trail. Two people were carried, and one person was partially buried. Thankfully, no one was injured. The first snowshoer triggered the avalanche while crossing under a steeper slope. This is the second avalanche this month that caught and buried snowshoers.

Wherever you plan to travel in the backcountry, whether it's on skis, foot, snowshoes, or snowmobile, it's all about avoiding trigger points. You can travel to many places without incident, but if you find just the wrong spot on the wrong slope, you can still trigger a dangerous slide. Look for and avoid convexities, shallow spots in the slab around rocky outcrops, and thin margins of the slab in cross-loaded terrain. Open slopes at all elevations affected by the wind are good areas to avoid.

Time has helped heal what was a very scary and dangerous snowpack, but even with healing, we must not forget the scars of the past.

This introduction has been a long time coming! Amy has been an excellent addition to our team in 2024:

Amy lived in Estes Park while growing up and has lived in Fort Collins for more than 26 years. She has been hiking in RMNP for 50+ years. She loves all things about Rocky and is excited to share the area with you. She enjoys hiking, skiing, and riding her Peloton bike. She has hiked in most of the National Parks in the western United States. She enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband and adult children.
