Sharing more holiday projects now that they’ve all been gifted! This was my first pair of custom HeyDude brand shoes and my first time working with watered down acrylic paints for more of a pastel type look. These were out of my usual comfort zone, but I learned a lot and they were a fun challenge. Most importantly - they were loved by the recipient!

I am looking forward to doing more in 2025. Let me know if you have ideas for a custom pair for yourself or to gift. We could do just about anything on them! School spirit, sports, animals, western style tooling, ranch brands, family etc.

It’s a “Doggy Bag”. Get it? 🥁🤣

Made this for my Mama for Christmas! If I make another, I want to play with the pattern a bit, but she loved it and that’s all I care about.

I had *just* enough of this gorgeous turquoise Badalassi Carlo Pueblo to make a hand-stitched collar. I know I’m a wee bit biased, but I think it really makes the whole thing.

Happy New Year to all! Thank you for your support and patronage in 2024. I’m looking forward to whatever 2025 brings. Let me know if you’ve got a custom project in mind.

Keep an eye on this page and on Instagram () for products I’ve never done before. I’m excited and plan to post more regularly!

I can finally share the end result of my sneak peek post a while back. It’s a really cool (but bit of a long) story if you have any interest.

It’s not everyday you get to work with a piece of history. This big, beautiful Bowie knife is estimated to have been made around 1870 but could have been made as early as 1848. It came from a world renowned cutlery company in Sheffield, England started by a man named George Wostenholm. Among other styles, they were famous for making Bowie knives for men living on the American frontier.

This exact knife is showcased in what is largely considered to be one of the preeminent reference books on the subject, The Heritage of English Knives. It’s a very rare, large example of its kind.

A regular customer of mine reached out and asked if I’d perhaps be interested in taking on a “unique” project. He said this was not just a large knife, but more importantly extremely rare (and valuable - my first time handling and working with a knife that sold for 5 figures 😅). After dealing with him for awhile, I know that this man, who’s been in the knife dealing business for 30+ years and alive for 80+, doesn’t say “once in a lifetime knife” very often. This knife was already sold to one of his regular buyers, but didn’t have a sheath, which the customer felt it deserved (apparently they went back and forth on this point and the buyer had to convince my customer - I’m glad he won!).

After receiving the knife, I was put in touch with the new buyer. The only thing he knew he wanted was “some buckskin fringe - if possible”. He didn’t know much about leatherwork and offered to buy a buckskin fringe jacket for me to cut up if that was needed. I said we could do much better than that. 😁 He had no other ideas or requirements for the project. He actually hadn’t seen the knife in person yet, just the photo in the aforementioned book!

As soon as I had the knife in hand, I immediately had some ideas. I gave him a rough explanation of what I was thinking, but also said I wanted some of the final product to be a surprise. He said he liked what he was hearing, that he trusted me to do right by the knife and that I had artistic license to do whatever I wanted. That’s always fun to hear as a craftsperson, but also a nerve racking responsibility. This person is putting their trust (and their VERY expensive knife) in your hands. I came to find out he owns a few of my other custom sheaths by way of my original customer - the dealer - and specifically asked him to ask me if I would do this sheath because he enjoys my work that much. Pretty awesome!

The blade etching says “For Stags and Buffalos” and its large scale (20” overall length and the spine of the knife is a hair over 3/8” - an absolute beast!) shows this knife it’s meant to be an impressive piece and used on the most epic of hunts, by users who were equally as impressive.

I wanted this knife and sheath package to tell a story. I envisioned the original owner of this knife being a legendary Mountain Man. He made his living hunting and trapping while roaming the Rocky Mountains in the mid to late 1800’s. He would’ve made this sheath himself out of what was readily available to him. It would’ve served as a makeshift diary of his expeditions. He would’ve collected small trophies from his most memorable hunts and beads received in trade with the Native Americans who knew him.

After a lot of research on period techniques and materials, here are some of the details I added, all of which were new to me:
-Antique Buffalo tooth - (a nod to the “For Buffalos”)
-Antiqued, large antler burr button (a nod to the “For Stags” and to match the stag handle scales)
-Rattlesnake inlay on belt loop
-Badger claw stitched to bottom of belt loop
-Tin cones with hand tied horsehair tassels
-Carved bone beads (newer)
-Glass Padre beads
-Genuine, mostly period correct antique trade beads made from fired clay and Venetian glass
-Brass domed spots
-Individually hand cut buckskin fringe.

The tin cones and brass spots were brand new and way too shiny to look old and worn, so I had to force patina them by hand. You can see the before and after pictures in the album.

The body of the sheath also required materials and techniques I’ve never used before. The inside is made from my usual vegetable tanned (bovine) leather, but the outside is wet formed deer rawhide. It has to be worked quickly and constantly kept wet, otherwise it is extremely difficult to use. Once it was double whip stitched by hand all the way around, the rawhide dries rock hard. While dyeing the rawhide, I didn’t want it to be uniformly colored, otherwise it would’ve looked brand new. I think it turned out really nicely. I then went back and used some rough grit sandpaper to add some extra patina, wear spots, and texture in a few areas.

I think I hit my goal of making something that looks 150+ years old to match the knife and they compliment each other really well to complete the whole package. With everything being 100% done by hand, and all the new to me techniques/materials, I’d estimate I have about 20-25 hours into it. I could definitely cut it way down now that I’ve got one under my belt and I’m not terrified to screw something up to the point of needing to restart. 😂

I was thrilled to receive a call from the buyer who said it was better than he ever could have expected and far exceeded anything he was able to envision. He is a massive collector of all kinds of high end things and was kind enough to call my sheath “museum quality”. He said his wife originally couldn’t understand why he would spend 5 figures on “just a knife” when he told her about the rare find. But once they sat and opened the package together, as soon as she had the knife and sheath in her hands, she said she totally “got it” and they were both ecstatic to add it to their collection.

This project is squarely in the Top 3 of the coolest I’ve ever made, in my opinion. It really challenged me in a lot of ways. It was stressful trying to make it “perfectly imperfect” and recalibrate my brain, temporarily, from trying to make my usual work very clean, sleek, and fairly modern.

I’d like to do more of this style of “Mountain Man”, period correct, Native American inspired sheath work, so if you have a knife that fits the bill - gimme a shout!

If you’ve made it this far, thanks for reading!

“It ain’t easy being green.” - Kermit the Frog 🐸😎

I was really happy with how this sheath turned out for this beautiful Van Barnett art dagger. The Midnight Green ostrich leg matches so well with the dark green, subtly sparkly stone on the handle and the green Ritza tiger thread. I wanted to play off the plant motif on the guard and think it tied everything together nicely. I also hand skived the leather under the ostrich inlay to mimic the triangular shape created by the grind lines on the blade. That seems like a trademark detail on several of Van’s blades.

Thanks for looking. I’ll try to be better about posting recent projects. There have been some fun ones lately!

This fun memory popped up today! I’d love to do more custom Chucks if anyone’s interested.
