A cornerstone of the Humboldt Bay Maritime Museums collection is its excursion boat, the MV Madaket. The 1910 ferry was originally built on Humboldt Bay with 6 other similar boats designed to transport Eureka's mill workers to and from lumber operations across Humboldt Bay. Originally christened the "Nellie C" after a member of the Cousins family which built her, she served as a ferry boat from Ta

ble Bluff, Fields Landing, Eureka, Samoa and Arcata until 1972 when she was the last to be put out of daily use due to construction of the Samoa Bridge which made the commute faster by car. Now rebuilt and also the oldest operating passenger vessel in the nation still providing passenger service, she provides visitors the opportunity to see Eureka and the port from her decks, while experiencing a narrative of the history of the port and city and the founding and fortune of both and visiting her aboard tavern, the smallest licensed bar in California. Cruises Depart seasonally every year from Mid-May to the first weeks of October. Private Charters for school groups, birthday parties, weddings, business events and get together are available in the am and pm hours during her cruise season.
75-minute narrated cruises 18.00 adults, 16.00 Sr/Jr/Student, 10.00 child
Cocktail Cruise 10.00 per person, all ages

Greetings to all. To a recent FaceBook comment and in response to letters in the past, we wish to inform and clarify for the public Madaket’s flag protocol.

The “Mariners Bible”, “Chapman’s Piloting, Seamanship and Small Boat Handling” and “United States Power Squadrons” state that the ensign (United States flag) shall be flown in the place of “Honor” on the vessel’s stern from a single mast or staff when operating on inland waters.

If underway on the high seas the ship shall show its “colors” (national flag) at the highest point to show all of her nationality and whether friend or foe.

The California flag is flown on Madaket’s main mast, the house flag of the Maritime Museum is sometimes flown from Madaket’s foremast. Both these masts can be used for any flags, signal flags or pennants.

The Union Jack, also known as the Union Flag, is flown from the Madaket’s jack staff located at the vessel’s bow. This flag is mainly used by military vessels when not underway but can be used by any craft when she is dressed for a special occasion. We continue the tradition that was started by the Madaket’s builder, Henry H. Cousins, in 1910.

Flag etiquette is much different on land than it is at sea.

Be assured all of Madaket’s flags are flown in accordance to United States maritime customs and are flown with great pride and respect. Thank you.

Leroy Zerlang, master mariner and senior captain of the motor vessel Madaket

🎂 Happy Birthday to M/V Madaket. 113 years cruising Humboldt Bay! The boat in the picture is Madaket. In the mid 1930’s the wheelhouse was lowered to the main deck sending the engineer “by-the-boards,” or done away with.

To find out more about Madaket’s history and the vessels that operated on Humboldt Bay pick up the book “Madaket Tells Her Story” at Madaket’s ticket office - Foot of C St., Eureka or stop by the Humboldt Bay Maritime Museum in Samoa. 10.00 each.

Come celebrate with us in June, take a cocktail cruise at 5:30 (Tue.-Sat) or a 75-min. narrated cruise, depart daily. https://www.humboldtbaymaritimemuseum.com/madaket-cruises.html
