In the heart of the Everglades lies the Fakahatchee Strand, an unparalleled stronghold of biodiversity. Nine distinctive ecosystems provide homes for over one-thousand plant species, including one of the rarest orchids on earth. Hundreds of animal species dwell within its boundaries, and Fakahatchee is core habitat for the endangered Florida panther. Tropical epiphytes, carnivorous bladderworts, and the American alligator are just a few reasons why the Fakahatchee is known around the globe as the "Amazon of North America."

TNT Explore Nature invite you to join us in the Everglades' Fakahatchee Strand Preserve, for an immersive adventure where you will become intimately acquainted with the heart of the Everglades. Make memories that will last a lifetime!

One of the most iconic trees of the South Florida landscape is the native Ficus aurea, commonly called the "Strangler Fig." Pictured here are the roots of the Stragnler Fig, wrapped tightly around another SoFlo native, the Bald cypress tree. The Fig begins its journey as an epiphyte, sprouting roots in a crook or crack filled with decomposing plant matter. Eventually, as the roots reach for the ground below, the fig will choke out its host. The roots strangle and prevent the host from absorbing water. If that method isn't successful, the fig will spread its canopy until it eventually envelops the canopy of the host and deprives it of sunlight. You never knew trees could be so vicious, did you?

A rare sighting in our backyard today! A Mangrove Diamondback Terrapin, a turtle endemic to the Everglades and Keys of south Florida. Seven subspecies of terrapin inhabit the United States, and all are found in coastal, estuarine ecosystems. Terrapins are not currently on the endangered species list but are considered a species of special concern. A number of factors contribute to this: habitat loss; incidental catch of the Blue Crab trade; and the pet trade. Terrapins and their eggs are protected in Florida and may not be possessed. To say we were excited to see this beautiful animal in our canal is a gigantic understatement!!

When your Valentine knows the way to your heart 🩷 isn't fancy restaurants (is it organic?) or cut flowers (who wants already dead plants?) and he takes you to one of your favorite hangouts instead. 🥰 What's not romantic about sighting and counting native snakes? Especially when you observe a whopping FOURTEEN on the 14th! Okay, well, that one turned out to be just a leaf, so we only saw 13, 🤯 but Holy Moly what a night!!! All were water snakes, 3 Brown, 2 Southern/Banded; and 8 Water Moccasin (aka Cottonmouth), several very young, likely recently hatched.

(2/2) February's "First Friday Everglades Guided Hike" Prairie Tram Edition sure was a lot of fun! In addition to becoming immersed in the Marl Prairie, we enjoyed the opportunity to explore two companion ecosystems to the River of Grass: Tropical Hardwood Hammocks, and Cypress Domes. TNT would like to thank everyone who participated in the tour; we enjoyed spending the morning with you in our beloved Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park. 02/07/25.

First Friday Everglades Guided Hike: February Edition: Prairie Tram. It was the perfect morning for a hike in the River of Grass. The sky was blue, the sun was shining. We observed several bird species, including a pair of Red-shouldered hawks, a variety of butterflies, and at least a dozen wildflowers, like White-tops, Glades lobelia, and Swamp lilies. (Part 1/2) Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park 02/07/25.

Last Monday morning, we met up with guests David, and Lora, to enjoy a delightful Fakahatchee Swamp Walk. The water was cool and clear, the air was mild, and the sun was shining against a vibrant blue sky. It was the perfect morning for a swamp walk. We shared our slough with an alligator, a Brown water snake (not a Cottonmouth, sorry, misidentified that one!) and several wading birds. We encountered numerous rare and interesting plants, including several bromeliad and orchid species, and even some blooming "Dingy Star" orchids.

"Oh what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day!"
