When the French were first exploring Florida, they brought along an accomplished artist by the name of Jacques La Moyone. La Moyone was to assist with mapmaking and documenting the new world of Florida for France He arrived at the mouth of the St. John’s river in 1564 with Rene Goulaine de Laudonnière, the founder of Fort Caroline on Florida’s East Coast.

La Moyone’s work is a peak into the world of the first people of Florida. He documented their customs, ceremonies, rituals, and even historic events during his travels through the state. My two favorite are the drawings depicting how the Florida natives harvested, alligator and deer. If you are a Florida historian, you will recognize his maps…..his other work is worth a closer look.

This is the elusive Sphinx Moth…. The pollinator for the equally as elusive Ghost Orchid.. considered one of the rarest orchids in the world. This guy decided to fly right into the window and pay us a visit!

If you’re not familiar with the ghost orchid, check out the book “ The Orchid Theif” by Susan Orlean….. and “Adaptation” with Nicolas Cage and Meryl Streep. Which was shot on location here in the Everglades.

We discovered this wounded alligator today. Its back left leg was reduced to a stump. I noticed other scarring around his head & neck… This was done by another (even larger) alligator!

The snowbirds are here in full force!!

These massive White Pelican migrate here each year from southern Canada and the Dakotas. They have the second largest wingspan only to the Condor, with the male White Pelican, reaching 9ft.

As the water levels drop the river otters return to Turner River here in the Big Cypress Preserve. They seem very curious with the kayaks, and sometimes follow us through the mangrove tunnels!!

The fist settlers arrived in the 10,000 Islands & Western Everglades in the early 1800’s. Traces of their homesteads & personal belongings are still visible among the islands. These little clues along with some photos and and stories handed down to their ancestors, are all that remain.

Now this young man decided he wanted to come to the Everglades and catch his first snook and a python for his 15th birthday….So he did.

The python was a female just over 10ft and was sent to Florida Gulf Coast University for further studies. The snook wasn’t quite as big 😁 and was released in the 10,000 Islands. Thanks Kendra, Dallas and Happy Birthday Wyatt!!
